2m is not locked on the GD-88. Go to frequency mode and just enter a frequency in the 2m band

How does aprs work when aprs is vhf?

APRS is a digital protocol that works on the 2m band. The GD-88 has 2m digital mode.

You do not want this for gmrs. It’s overkill. Buy a baofeng gmrs-9r
