We have 3 cats and my son has 2 cats and visits frequently. INFRA RED COLLAR TAG TYPE: We had used a different manufacturers infra red type cat flap for 2 years, until four months ago, when we finally decided the cost of buying the replacement infra red transmitters was prohibitive at between £10 to £15 each time. Either the plastic collar tag terminals corroded or the plastic collar tag cases split - with monotonous frequency. To be fair to the manufacturer, the tags are guaranteed for 2 years and they say they will issue a replacement free of charge - but you try finding the receipt for the respective INFRA RED collar tag after several weeks - we were never able to take advantage of the maker's 2-year guarantee We abandoned the INFRA RED collar tags and left the cat flap unlooked so that our cats could come and go as they pleased. This worked well for 4 months until last week – 27th January 2013 – when a neighbourhood un-neutered tom cat decided to visit on two consecutive nights and spray urine on the furniture downstairs. Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap: We bought the Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap on the basis of the highest number of 5 Star reviews we have seen of a product. I was concerned that the hole in our new PVC back door would not be the right size to fit the Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap. There was no need to worry as the sizes were almost identical and did not need any modifications – other than the screw holes were in slightly different positions and I had to drill 2 x new 6mm holes to fit the new cat door. The build quality of the Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap is excellent – the housing components fit together seamlessly, the plastic is thicker, the door features a draught excluder, which works (it doesn’t stop draughts completely but is more effective at minimising draughts compared to our previous cat flap). The Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap door is marginally narrower than our previous cat flap by about 10mm but this has not proved to be a problem with our 3 cats, two of which are quite large in size. Aesthetically, the Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap is very good. In operation, the Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap has been flawless and so far as we are able to determine, has allowed our cats unimpeded access, whilst denying the neighbourhood tom cat access to spray in our house. I like many people, do not usually write reviews for the many products, which I buy. I am so impressed with the Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap that I felt compelled to review it. It deserves its 5 Star reputation. It is an excellent product.

So, the usual cat owner problem, our cat soft as grease (as are the neighbours cats in fairness, though it's fair to say one of them is soft as dough... like a dough ball... that eat all the other dou.... you know what I'll say it, SHE'S FAT. That kitty consumes worlds for breakfast, she should have the silver surfer going ahead of her to warn people of their impending planetary doom), as I was saying...... just sits back and watches the neighbours cats eat his food. When we're at work we have no idea if he's actually managed to get a look in (as we work different times sometimes he's not in when food goes down). Well that has all changed thanks to this cat flat! *Robust construction - Definitely the most sturdy cat flap we have used. *Easy installation - if in a glass door you will need a new glass panel that has a hole in it (less than £30 for a patterned, toughened, double glazed panel with the required cut out for the flap, from my local glazer) you will need the additional surround (frankly this finishes it off much nicer anyway) and bare in mind, you may need to trim the bottom of the said surround, but unless you are infirm this is a simple task with a good sharp stanley knife (other brands of knife are available), or I guess hacksaw and file.... *VERY EASY TO REGISTER YOUR CAT(S) and for the cats to use - Even our cat that is scared of anything different had no problem wandering up to it and soon (less than a few hours) was happily hopping in and out. *Batteries last around 6 months and there is a low battery indicator. *IT IS NOT TRIGGERED by your cat simply being in the vicinity, this is the cleaver part, it reads the chip as your cat pokes it's head in (and it is instant), so no chance of interlopers popping in just because your cat is sat on the back step, or sat next to the flap. *The most compact scanning cat flap I have seen, it is barely bigger than a normal cat flap. *Our cat is much happier and seems a lot more settled now. Sir Isaac Newton would be proud of Sureflap for improving upon his invention! UPDATE: ONE YEAR ON *Changed the batteries for the first time late last month. *Still working fantastically well. *The flap has now paid for itself due to the money we have saved in food. *Our cat is a hell of a lot more confident and happy than he was, to the point where when he is outside he no longer let's other cat's bully him. *As an added bonus we have noticed that we no longer get gusts of wind blowing through on stormy days!

I did have this reviewed as a 5 star but dropped it down to 4 only on price (£70 is quite expensive for a cat flap...). However, I am very happy with the cat flap, the function, look and ease of installation and setup. I bought this after we had a couple of late night visits from another cat who came in through our normal cat flap for a sneaky (and smelly) look around... Read through a few reviews on here and elsewhere and picked this flap as it was the solution I was after (chip reader not one that works with another thingy on a cat collar). The old flap was removed and this one fitted in the existing hole very easily. The surround on this new flap is actually smaller than the standard cat flap it was replacing and looks great (white body with clear plastic flap). The instructions for setting up were very easy to follow and we soon had our cat (and chip) stored/paired with the flap. The mechanism/lock does make a slight 'click' noise but it didn't disturb our cat, even though she can be a little jumpy being a recused cat. The instruction booklet does give good advice if your cat has any issues with the flap, to help them get used to it, but thankfully we've had no issues at all. You can deactivate the chip reader and use the flap as a standard cat flap with the usual 4 way dial but we have had no need. Even though the instructions mention reduced functioning time with rechargeable batteries, I did try the flap with rechargeable batteries. Result - they didn't last long. Batteries should last around 6 months. The rechargeable ones lasted 2-3 weeks (I think they were old) but the non-rechargeable ones have been in for a couple of months now and the low battery LED has not started to flash.

I just installed this flap today after having problems with next door's cat coming into the house to eat. This wouldn't have been an enormous issue (he does no damage and my cat gets along with him) except that he has a long running feud with the local bully, a black cat who attacks all the other cats in the area. Last night was the final straw when they evidently were both in my kitchen yowling at one another! This freaked my cat out so I decided enough was enough and went out to get a file to make the existing hole fractionally bigger so I could install this flap which arrived a week or so ago. That was no problem, I enlarged the hole and slipped the SureFlap in place. Within a few minutes, the interloper was trying to get in, to no avail. I programmed my cat into it without any difficulty, her chip is right between her shoulder blades. But getting her to use it... there's another thing! I went outside and lured her out. It took a while but eventually she figured out that she had to push it with a paw and not just her nose. However... going back in. So far she still hasn't done it. Once outside she sniffed about then took a look at the new door. It was very sunny and the plastic is highly reflective. She saw herself in the door, thought it was a strange cat inside her house and freaked out. She puffed up to twice her normal size and shot off around the side of the house. It was very funny but obviously I had to solve that. So I got some mud and smeared it on the outside of the flap so that it wasn't as reflective as it used to be. You can still just about see out of it if you're inside, but on the outside unless the light is on indoors you can't really see through it any more. She then was happily sticking her head in the tunnel and you could hear it click quietly which makes her start just a little. I'm hopeful that she'll get used to it quickly because I can't be having the big bully coming into the house tearing her to pieces. My main concern right now is that she is used to hurtling through the door when she runs away from him. (Until last night he didn't seem to have any notion that he could come in but now he's seen the other male do it I think he figured it out.) I don't know if it will react fast enough and open the flap without her smacking into it. It may put her off of using it altogether. I'll report back on progress in a while. Jan 9, 2012 A month has now gone by since my cat began using this new flap. It took her a couple of days to start using it to enter the house. I ended up having to cover the inside and outside of the flap in white Scotch tape so she couldn't see her own reflection (but you can see kinda see through it). That was freaking her out a bit so perhaps something for SureFlap to consider in future. Maybe offer an opaque door flap as an option. On the whole though this door has been a life saver. It stopped the other cats from entering - maybe he's brighter than your average kitty but the main offender learned almost immediately that he could no longer get in that way and stopped trying. The only problem, if you can call it that, is that my cat can no longer hurtle through the door, it just doesn't react that fast. But she's learned that and doesn't try to enter it at a run. I worry a little that she may get caught by the big bully cat who occasionally chases her but so far that hasn't been the case. My only other concern and perhaps someone can inform me - does it give you any warning when the batteries are about to die or do I need to test them periodically to see how long they're likely to last? March 10, 2012 There's a slight flaw in this door but I guess not likely to affect most users. My cat is constantly being chased by her enemy, the female cat who lives next door. One day recently she was in hot pursuit and when Mizz came through the door she was so close behind that she was simply able to follow her in because the door hadn't yet shut. This can't be called a design flaw, it's more to do with the nasty character of the cat next door but if you're thinking that it's completely fool proof, it's not. As luck would have it, my husband and I were both in the kitchen when this happened so no fight ensued. The interloper was terrified to find herself in this strange situation and being unfamiliar with cat doors she didn't simply turn around and go back out, instead running off into the house. Hopefully the experience scared her sufficiently that she won't do it again! Regarding the batteries, I tested them and three months after installation they're still almost at max strength so they're going to last a long time. Overall I highly recommend this product; it's miles better than the ones that rely on a collar tag, the microchip isn't going to get lost!
