Lots of action... just great !
This is my first foray into the Percy Jackson Series and as I am not a 'book reader', I can only judge it on this movie, which I thoroughly enjoyed !I will be definitely watching the prequel to this (perhaps I should have watched it first ?) but nevertheless I enjoyed every minute of this movie.I don't 'analyse' movies as some people do, I watch it, and judge it on contents, is it easy to follow (I hate too many flashbacks !), is the acting good (very important) and was I entertained... if the answer is yes to all of those, I am a happy man - and they all got a 'yes' from me in this movie.5 stars !

Olympus has fallen
...well, not literarily...but economically, Percy Jackson is dead in the water now. Although the second film is much better than the first one as far as fun, characters and SFX are concerned, it failed to make much money at the box office. And it's not per se the fault of this film but of all the wrong choices made with the first one. This second film really feels like a wonderful follow-up to the early Harry Potter series in tone, style and content and could have been a marvellous adventure in that vein, but the basic problem of the first film has not been solved: the actors are far too old for this kind of story, which takes away any sort of real magic. Imagine a 22-something-year-old Daniel Radcliff stumbling around Hogwards in year two? This is exactly how this here comes off... it's travesty that both destroys the film series and backfires at the book series as it interfers with the readers' imagination and inner depiction of the main characters. With the films now officially a financial failure and the books irreperably devaluated by the films and their cast, this franchise is as dead as the Titans. Olympus has fallen and all is one tartarus of a mess. It's such a pity given the neat production values and content points of this feature, the glorious scores and the great mythology. I so much wanted to like it and seen it prevail...I'll probably never understand why Chris Columbus screwed the casting up with the first one. He who paved the way for Harry Potter? He who gave us mischievous Kevin? He's great at working with child actors so why did he throw this opportunity away? And why did Riordan back him? If he wanted them to be older, he would have written the books differently, no matter what he has stated in recent interviews! Now fill-in director Thor Freudenthal had to deal with it. He tried the best they could with the flashback sequences and moving up the age of prophecy from 16 to 20, but it's simply not enough. As I wrote 3 years ago: the ONLY valid way to save this series from oblivion would have been to retcon part 1 in flashbacks and cast younger actors to save the day... Asa Butterfield as Percy Jackson and Chloe Moretz as Annabeth could have made a difference and could have provided this film series with a fighting chance to survive! Now it's all over, ruined for eternity. There will never be a Percy Jackson flick again but at least Lerman and Daddario are out of the game now...Gosh, Daddario is so "mature" she now stars in adult horror flicks such as Texas Chainsaw... She's got no right to play Annabeth ever again...

For those who haven't read the books :-)
I am an avid reader so understand how disappointing it can be when they make one of your favourites into a film and ruin it but I haven't read this series, at least not yet anyway so I will review the film on it's own merit.Firstly I would say it's essential to have seen the first film before you watch this one, you need to have the back story to understand the characters and how they came to be friends or enemies with certain people, the first film also explains who Percy is and how he came to camp half blood. If you have seen the lightning thief and enjoyed it then you will love this second instalment which is even better in my opinion. I feel Sea of Monsters is just so much more pulled together with much better character development and pacing and the effects are amazing, particularly in 3D.I really like the new characters introduced in this film and felt the amount of people we get to see more of means you get a much better feeling of what camp half-blood is like and what Percy's life is like there. The story is easy to follow and though it's a little predictable in parts there are plenty of twists and surprises, I just hope that a third film is in the works as we do get hints of what else is to come and I can't wait!
