From David Cronenberg, the master of body horror, comes a beguiling new tale. As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed...Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.

New organs for a new age.
(Crimes Of The Future (2021) review MUBI stream)This instantly has to be for me the most riveting film that David Cronenberg has produced since Videodrome. Now we're shown that the new hybrid monsters are just as complex and fuelled by uncertainty as we all are today, while the hybrid creatures roam their strange decaying environment of rusted beached shipwrecks and repurposed technology. We're shown that the body has changed, is in fact continuously changing and evolving and that Videodrome’s “new flesh” and “television is reality” have each respectively evolved into “surgery is the new sex” and “body is reality”. Cronenberg’s dream-like transition between scenes now has a masterful touch of effortless editing and composition together here with a honed ability to shock in some moments that have a razor sharp edge and there are some on screen moments that are far more extreme than in Crash (1996).If you like David Cronenberg’s previous films, then you pretty much know what to expect and - spoiler alert; this is a cerebral film and not a blockbuster type of movie where you can just munch on popcorn and switch off the brain. Sit back, gasp in horror unable to comprehend the shock of the new and enjoy the journey if you have the patience to allow the subtle themes to sink in. Is you do so, then there's a frisson of excitement to be had exploring the new body evolution that the cinematic creator of body horror has made and once again his film ends when events are about to get more interesting and there's also a tangible thread of optimistic hope for his characters. Long live the new plastic consuming flesh.

Very happy
I'll start by saying this is not a film for everyone. But as a Cronenberg fan I was very happy with this film. It may not be Cronenberg's best film but its certainly not his worst. I would recommend.

I hated it, but it does get a reaction.
Not enjoyable, entertaining or interesting. Just a depressing idea, like a thought experiment followed through to make this ugly film.

Too slow & cerebral.
I'm a big fan of Cronenberg and have been since the 70's, but this is one I'll not rewatch.
