Q: I hit a root with mine and it cut out. It won't restart. Any advice please?

Sorry I have no idea of the possibility of a cut out switch. It may be you let it run too long and it burnt out the motor. Certainly mine does not like roots but has not cut out yet. I do like this product, it has made my soil very light in a super quick time. You may just have been unlucky with the size of the root.

Q: Will this work over an area with grass? I am planning to regrass the garden but unsure if I need to remove all grass first. Thank you for the advice.

We got it for the veg plot really, did make a new bed, but had to remove turf first, course that could depend on soil, we are on heavy clay here, which after a hot dry summer is like cutting through housebricks! Depending on what you are going to use your (new) lawn for, you may be able to rough it up and sow grass seed, Autumn being the best time. We are happy with the tiller but it isnt a heavyweight commercial thing. A word of caution, if you hit a stone, it will go off course, (dont know if you have ever used a big floor polisher) sensible to wear proper workboots.

Yes it will work, one has to go quite gently at stones as they can get stuck in the blade but once free they can be removed from the work area, the same for weeds as chopped in two doubles the number.

Q: does it have a thermal cut out worked for 1hr now wont start

In the first instance running such a small machine for an hour is quite a long time.The Handy does have a thermal cut out which resets as the maccine cools down.It also has a cutout that operates due to a blockage of the tines or damage to them, examine and clean theses.As a long shot your fuse in the plug might have blown,Hope this helps.Barry
