Soundtrack From Twin Peaks

Full disclosure; I'm a Twin Peaks fan. I'd be extremely interested in the opinion of anyone who hasn't watched the show, but this review is coming from someone who has watched the entire series twice through. I've since come to discover that 'twice' is an extremely low number of views for serious fans. This soundtrack is absolutely amazing. Badalamenti is in top form, and there's not a single track on here which disappoints. I'll go track-by-track, because this album demands nothing less than your full attention. 1) Twin Peaks Theme - From the opening guitar, you're instantly brought to the minds-eye vistas of scenic Twin Peaks- Douglas Firs, mountains, a mill, and... just a slight undertone of darkness. 2) Laura Palmer's Theme - Now, the true depths of the album are introduced. The minimal piano in the background only underscores the feelings of apprehension, suspicion, and paranoia... with just a hint of lightness popping up around 1:04... only to be brought back into the shadows at 1:56. 3) Audrey's Dance - Evocative of an old Private I movie... or a derelict Old-South speak easy... or a small-town strip club reeking of Parliaments and cheap whiskey. This track paints a definite picture- your experiences in life will determine the color palette. 4) The Nightingale - Julee Cruise lends her voice to several tracks on this and other Twin Peaks works, and she is nothing short of amazing. Reminiscent of Tracey Thorn, Beth Orton, and many other haunting songstresses, hers is a voice that any true trip-hop fan will instantly melt over. Myself included. This track will make you want to close your eyes, sit next to a window, and feel the cold winter air on the other side. 5) Freshly Squeezed - Similar in feel to 'Audrey's Dance', this one would fit perfectly in a smoky old jazz club. Basil Heyden Manhattan, if you please. 6) The Bookhouse Boys - God, that intro sax just cuts right through you. The brushed drums, the haphazard hi-hats, it all comes together in a haze of pure mystery. 7) Into The Night - This track will have you on your knees. Cruise devastates- this is easily my favorite song of hers. The song would feel equally at home on the next Massive Attack album- the yearning, the loss, the anxiety, the redemption. 8) Night Life in Twin Peaks - Do yourself a favor and TURN ON THE LIGHTS before playing this song. If you listen to this song in the dark, you'll become convinced that a serial killer is in the room with you. And I'm not saying that there isn't one there, but this song will definitely scratch your nerves. 9) Dance of the Dream Man - Whereas Audrey's Dance made you want to indulge your inner pole-dancer, this one will have you feeling Rat-Pack-ready. Jazzy and urban, haunting and upbeat, this one will have you ironing out a nice shirt and trying to figure out how to exactly to 'put on the Ritz'. 10) Love Theme from Twin Peaks - Opens with even more throbbing anxiety than Laura Palmer's Theme, the highs get a little higher and the lows get a little lower. A deep one. 11) Falling - Oh, Julee Cruise. Julee, Julee Cruise. This soundtrack could serve as the perfect gateway drug to your wondrousness, and if people discovered you only through this album, then that wouldn't be a terrible thing. This is the perfect song to wrap up the album. 'Nuff said. This album is extremely cohesive. The instrumentals are perfectly balanced by Cruise, and both categories of song are represented perfectly. A great album for late-night listening, road trips, nostalgia, and dark wistful days.

This review is for the Warner Brothers black vinyl German pressing: if you have high-end system. If you have entry level system. If you have a budget used system. If you have a $79 suitcase player from Wal-Mart. This record will fill your room with magic.

It's a gift so I haven't listened to it. My grandson likes it.

I'm giving this album five stars, as I believe there is enough goodness here to justify calling it a must-have purchase for "Twin Peaks" fans. That said, it is missing a couple of important things. While the album includes three beautiful, iconic recordings by Julee Cruise, including "Falling," the vocal version of the "Twin Peaks" theme song, it is missing "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart," one of my favorite of her tracks created for the show. I have no idea why this track isn't included on this album, but thankfully Amazon does seem to sell it as a stand-alone mp3. Secondly, I can't fathom why "Sycamore Trees" performed by Little Jimmy Scott does not appear on this album. Well, maybe I can understand it: they made a follow-up soundtrack, seemingly dedicated to Season 2, and it was in the last episode of the series that "Sycamore Trees" was played. However, it's not on the Season 2 Soundtrack album either! If you want to find it, "Sycamore Trees" can be heard on the "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" movie soundtrack. I have no idea why it's there, as I can't even recall the song being played in the film whatsoever. Still, all's well that ends well; I'm happy that it can be purchased online at all, even if it doesn't show up on the album where you'd expect to find it. Those minor gripes aside, this is a fantastic album, showcasing some of the best of Angelo Badalamenti's score and, as previously mentioned, three gorgeous vocal tracks by Julee Cruise. All of the familiar themes are there, from the "Twin Peaks Theme" itself to the haunting "Dance of the Dream Man." I've got good news: this music you like will never go out of style. Let's rock!

Such a wonderful album, and includes one of the greatest television themes of all times. Beyond dreamy~

Angelo Badalamenti's Atmospheric soundtrack for this epic television series captures perfectly in how I feel about Twin Peaks. A perfect example when I listen to track number 5 'Freshly Squeezed' I can just imagine myself driving the highway into the town of Twin Peaks surrounded by the majestic Douglas Fir trees. This is One of the best soundtracks I've ever bought. Well recommended. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
