Is this left or right handed?

Right only. There is no way to convert this for left handed use. The base is wider on one side than the other and therefore is less stable if used on the left side. There is a locking button only on one side.

What kind of hand rest does it have, soft or firm?

Firm. It's a great cane because the base isn't in the way when you walk and the light is bright either way you have it on.

Are the legs evenly spaced

Well they're closer together in the front and the same in the back. From front prong to back prong is a wider gap. My husband likes this cane as it stands when released, vs. having to hang it in the back of a chair, etc. to keep it upright and easily accessible. I recommend also buying extra rubber footings for bottom of prongs as they do go missing.

does the finish scratch off?

Absolutely not. I have had my cane for some time and it looks brand new. I have accidentally banged it on things and dropped it, but the finish is intact. It’s really a nice cane, and I like that it stands alone!
