Fender has spent the last decade impressing me over and over again with their Squier line of once-unobtainable classic models at a budget friendly price. This instrument was an absolute steal at the price I paid ($299 on sale) and is easily worth twice that. The solid construction, quality hardware and electronics make this one of the best bangs for you buck currently available. Included are bonus touches like a matte-finish to the back of the neck, a gorgeous pearlescent finish in surf green and a set of very versatile active pickups with a simple battery cavity on the rear of the body. It's important to note that this guitar sports a 25.5" neck with a 12" radius, similar to what you would find on a Les Paul, which considering it also borrows the Gibson-style bridge and tailpiece made perfect sense to me. I would not normally point this out but I have seen several "one star" reviews where the user simply did not read the specifications, so that should be kept in mind. So what actual concessions do you make at this price range? Surprisingly not that many. The beautiful laurel fingerboard immediately drank up the MusicNomad F-One fretboard oil I use during setups and once properly conditioned provides a very smooth playing surface. During my setups I also crown and level the frets which had one or two sharp edges (nothing major, but noticeable). Honestly though these feel more like nitpicks than actual criticisms of Fender's offering as I have had no real issues or complaints - even right out of the box it felt great to play. The active "SQR" pickups sound bright and crunchy yet clear and once lowered provide some very versatile and lovely tones. I really can't say enough good things about this purchase, Fender continues to improve their Squier line year after year while continuing to improve on quality and price for performance. If you're even considering one of these I think you'll be very pleased with this product.
