Foundational Trading: Plan-Prepare-Execute-Assess: Mastering Trading Strategies for Continuous Improvement Paperback – October 31, 2023

This book is a great overview of many of the concepts taught by Tortoise trading to handle trades on multiple time frames, which tend to range between intraday to several weeks. The methodology is fractal, consistent across multiple time frames and products. If you are thinking about trading on shorter time frames, this is a structured approach with over a decade of documented trade reports and several years of daily and weekly podcasts. The book is a designed to be both an introduction and a companion to the method. I have taken several of the courses and I found the book helpful in clearly tying together several concepts taught in the courses. It also gives additional insight into the philosophy behind many of the teachings in the Tortoise Community. If you have never taken any of the courses, you may find the book to be a useful introduction but it does not have the necessary detail to completely stand on its own and there are a few places where a new reader may find that the concepts need more explanation. That said, it is a primer for taking a foundational course, and the book certainly encourages you to take the courses and subscribe to the service, which are reasonably priced. I would recommend reading the book and then beginning to watch many of the YouTube videos available as the next step and checking out the content on the tortoise website from there. I think you will find that the book opens up a ton of useful free online content for you that will clarify some of the content not fully laid out in the book. From there, you can decide whether the courses and paid service are interesting for you. The library of online content available at low cost is a useful trading resource once you understand some of the specialized custom terminology, and I would consider the book an introduction to that content and the philosophy behind it.

Helped me achieve positive expectancy.Foundational Trading is an excellent introduction to the vast amount of high quality trading systems, tools and education provided by Tortoise Capital. Full disclosure - I have attended Dr Ken Long's workshops. I think they are fantastic and unique. Dr Ken and the Tortoise Capital team are genuinely good human beings.By way of background I've had an interest in trading for over 15 years but achieving confidence and consistent profitability has been elusive. This year I joined the Tortoise community to immerse myself in becoming a competent trader. This book is a comprehensive and gentle introduction to decades of research and systems that work. Expect to take many of the affordable educational offerings to begin your journey to mastery, such as the foundations course or Kata challenge where you are coached on trading the patterns on one symbol for multiple weeks until you truly understand them.As a former software engineer, I love these systems that are based on statistics and adaptive parameters, are fractal over different time period from intraday to overnight holding periods.Chapter 5,6 and 7 are the core concepts. They cover the three views to align - the markets, the systems and the self; The plan - prepare - execute -assess method of process improvement to bring structure and discipline to daily trading activity.Read section 8 and 9 for the specific details on the Sniper Trading systems. Section 11 for step by step instructions on the process and example of the trading system that are available for many trading platforms.I can't say enough good things about this approach. It has worked for me. I am using these systems for intraday and hybrid swing trading. I find my mental state has evolved from feeling overwhelmed to a feeling of calm and professional control.This book also goes deep into the mental states needed to manage the chaotic nature of trading.If you are unsure, search for podcasts and videos of Dr Long. I think you'll get a sense for the deep craftsmanship, caring and expertise of Dr Ken Long and the Tortoise community.

This book clearly explains many of the important ideas in the Tortoise systems. He dives into the details of the Sniper System, the Plan-Prepare-Execute-Asses method and many ideas that are key to finding success in the trading game.There are untold thousands of books available, and finding good information and a good coach is one of the most difficult steps of becoming consistently profitable in trading. This is one of the few good ones.Even though there is no shortage of information about trading, only 1 in 1,000 traders succeed. The path to trading success is long and frustrating. This book has practical steps that can lead to consistently making money in the markets.Many of the most popular and recommended books on trading deal with trader psychology, which many coaches and successful traders believe is of paramount importance. Although this book does deal with psychology, it does it in a practical way. Instead of just writing about a successful mental state, this book includes simple exercises to create a successful trader's mental state.It also includes a process for daily improvement that is very useful. Learning to be a successful trader is a frustrating process, and learning to handle that on a daily basis is critical. A good daily process can help maintain the right mindset and prevent being overwhelmed by frustration.Highly recommended.

I have taken several courses from Dr Long and this book continues to amaze me with his teaching ability. He is so willing to share these valuable insights to the market. On top of being a brilliant market technician, his ability to pass on all of these golden nuggets should have everyone who purchases this book completely delighted!

This book lays out the level of detail and commitment required to trade effectively. The average 'trader' has no idea of what he or she is up against. Following this roadmap for foundational skills and knowledge will save investors considerable time, money and effort.
