Brer Rabbit is causing trouble again for his fellow creatures Brer Fox, Brer Wolf, and the rest--this time in an omnibus edition that brings together all the stories from Tales of Uncle Remus, More Tales of Uncle Remus, Further Tales of Uncle Remus , and Last Tales of Uncle Remus . The Uncle Remus tales, originally written down by Joel Chandler Harris, were first published over a hundred years ago, and serve as the largest collection of African-American folklore. In this four-book series, Julius Lester masterfully retains the flavor of the tales, while dropping the heavy dialect of the Harris originals and adding contemporary language and references-- ensuring that the stories will be understood and enjoyed by new generations of readers. And, of course, the stories are beautifully illuminated by the slyly humorous full-color and black-and-white art of Jerry Pinkney. The result is a treasure of a volume that will delight all ages and belongs on every shelf.

Perfect gift
My Dad remembered these stories and shared them with me. He mentioned them during a conversation and i knew it was a perfect gift as he is aging and no longer leaves the house. When he called to thank me I could tell he was truly happy and the book brought him such joy. He was very impressed with the quality

A very readable version of these great tales.
A very readable version of these great tales. The original is too difficult to read and is definitely politically incorrect. While Lester's version still keeps some black dialect, I have heard whites use worse English and don't think anyone will be offended by it. These stories are meant to be told to kids, not read. I advise story tellers to use this book as a source, then tell the stories in their own words. Modern kids love these stories as much as we did when we were young. Let's not let the next generation miss out on these stories that are a part of our national heritage.

Wonderful!!
Love it! Not that many illustrations, but the few that there are are really good. These stories are wonderful! I love reading them to my daughter, and donโt foresee stopping anytime soon.

Great entertaining stories from slavery days.
Well constructed. Beautiful pictures. Great stories. Looks like it contains all the Uncle Remus stories. Only drawback is the size of the book. It is a bit unwieldy unless read from the table or counter.

My dad used to read Uncle Remus stories to me when I was little. This brought back such great memories. The quality of the pages and binding is wonderful.

Gorgeous Edition of Complete Uncle Remus.
Avoiding Joel Chandler Harris' original heavily accented version, Julius Lester retells the stories in more readable English. Jerry Pinkney's colour & black & white illustrations enhance the hardcover book.

ARRIVED BADLY DAMAGED... I only get 35% refund...
The book itself is beautiful, but it arrived in poor condition (see photo's) In fact it looks like used. I contacted Amazon.co.uk customer service and I get a 35% refund. Not a 100% (which I paid for the book). Is this fair ?
