Is the portafilter holder removable?

Yes the metal part with the holder is removable. The plastic bin in the photo fits in its place for drip coffee. I had to grind down the top of the forks to get them to fit tightly and still fit the assembly in the grinder.

Can you use this machine to grind beans only without making espresso?

Absolutely - it has macro grind settings from 1-10 and micro grind settings from A-W. I use ~2 when I grind for espresso and ~9 when I grind to make chemex. Works great for both and can switch between very easily!

Does it have a battery backup?

No battery backup, but settings are retained with loss of power.
