Not as good as I remember
I first remember watching this as a youngster and being enthralled. I was pleased to be able to purchase it recently and looked forward to seeing it again. Unfortunately i was very underwhelmed by the whole thing this time. The idea of marrying fact and fiction with the Victorian sleuth is a good one but, for me, it just didn't hold my interest like it did when I first saw it. I'm not sure if that's because of my advancing years or learning of other explanations and motives for the infamous Jack since i first saw Murder by Decree as a teenager. Therefore I've heard it all before and it's been done much better since with movies like From Hell. I felt that the Holmes/Watson pairing - Plummer/Mason - was also a bit dull. Overall it felt more like an afternoon made-for-TV movie rather than a big budget Holmes adventure. I was very disappointed, so much so that i'll probably off-load it.However, it's still several beats better than the atrocious third series of Sherlock - what the hell was that nonsense all about? There is also another Sherlock Holmes/Jack movie titled, A Study In Terror. I haven't seen that one but have seen mixed reviews about it. Nonetheless, it would seem to me that the best Sherlock Holmes stories are the Sherlock Holmes stories themselves as time and time again, original stories, and the placing SH in different settings hardly ever works. The picture quality, while not anything to write home about, is okay, but there are no extras which is a let-down seeing as the cover describes it as the best big screen Sherlock Holmes.Maybe if I had never seen it before it would have been more enjoyable. Therefore, it deserves it's three stars which indicates that it doesn't stand up to repeated viewings - which it didn't for me.

Christopher Plummer plays the great Sherlock Holmes and with the help of Dr Watson ...
One of the least known films telling the story of Jack The Ripper. Christopher Plummer plays the great Sherlock Holmes and with the help of Dr Watson (the great James Mason) they try to unmask the Rippers true identity. This film is a must for any person who is interested in the famous Ripper mystery and like so many films on the Ripper subject the BIG question is will the true identity of Jack the Ripper be ever known ? This film definitely gets you thinking about the subject.

Heavy going
Not the best Sherlock film ever, despite good cast and production values. It's not a 'proper' Conan Doyle story, but has Sherlock chasing Jack the Ripper. It's quite heavy going.

Fantastic film. To me Christopher Plummer is at his best here. The film perfectly evokes the dark, sinister atmosphere at the time of Jack the Ripper. For me personally this is the best Jack the Ripper film there has ever been with great acting, plot line and climax.
