Beautifully made but quite expensive
This shoji game set came very well packaged with protective foam, and the craftsmanship of the wooden board, drawer and playing pieces is of a really high qualityThe wood is heavy, the drawer works well and doesn’t get stuck or feel too stiff, and I really like that the pieces are made from maple wood. The script font is printed nicely, a couple of them had a little bit of blurriness to the ink but nothing that prevents them being read easily. Also, the base of the board is felted so doesn’t slide on the floor or tableThe English instructions are well written and easy to follow, the diagrams are especially useful to learning the rules of the game. The booklet can fit inside the drawer with the game pieces which is great because I’m still learning and wouldn’t want to miss place it!Overall, excellent quality with detailed instructions. However the price is really expensive for a board game, but I could see this making a really lovely gift for someone and the fact it’s made from wood means it will last a really long time!

Nice set and good quality
Board feels well made, pieces are well printed and legible, instructions are clear and well written, nice storage draw for the pieces to go which fits nicely and stays put with magnets, base and feet have velvet on it which does make it slippy on certain surfaces. It feels well put together and sturdy and in general looks great.Overall its a nice shogi set with everything you need to play with an overall decent quality it is expensive but still cheaper than other boards on here.

Great quality
This has taken me a while to figure out how to play, but it's a wonderful item. Definitely great quality, which is reflected in the price. I think the player pieces could do with being the same quality as the board, as they are a bit thin, but other all a great game for those that love board games such as chess.

GETS THE GREY-MATTER WORKING
Really attractive Shogi set. The board looks really nice. The red wood and the maple make an attractive contrast. The board has a slide compartment inside to store the pieces. The whole thing feels nice quality. The print on the pieces is large and clear. For those that haven't played Shogi before there is a clear set of instructions. It may take time for those unfamiliar with the characters to distinguish between them but once learned it is an enjoyable game that requires a lot thought and strategy!

Nice quality imported item
This is a really lovely imported wooden game board with nice quality playing pieces. The board came ready well packaged with good thick foam padding in the box ensuring it wasn't damaged. The instructions included are good enough to get an overview of how to play the game, but you would probably benefit from playing with someone who has played before or watch a playthrough video online. It makes a nice centerpiece on a coffee table as an ornament even if you don't want to play the game.

Very High Quality but Expensive
This game set is very well made. It is all real, solid wood which looks great and will last a very long time. All the pieces nicely fit into a drawer built into the board which is very convenient and helps prevent you from losing the pieces. The only thing is that it is quite expensive at £63.99 when writing.

Beautiful ornament, frustratingly complex game.
This arrived well packaged in a foam container within an unbranded box.The gameboard itself is a little smaller than a standard chess or draughts board but is a decent size for the game. We had no issues playing with the pieces or moving around the board.Whilst a nice looking item it left me a little underwhelmed to be honest. The playing surface is veneered mdf.The body of the board looks to be moulded rather than carved (I may be wrong) and looks to be going for a cherry look, that said, when opening the drawer that holds the game pieces it was covered in red dust, implying stained wood. The pieces themselves are said to be Mapel. I think it would have looked a lot nicer with some sort of ceramic or stone pieces and for the price it may than have justified the tag.Having said all that, the overall look of the set is pretty good. It is a nice thing to have on display. And so, to the game itself.Me and the wife had a shogi night last night....I think of myself as fairly knowledgeable with the standard game of chess (which is why I was intrigued with this game), the wife knows the basics moves. This game is similar and once you get your head around how different the moves are you can start to try play the game.Or biggest issues were that the pieces are very difficult to distinguish, unlike standard chess pieces. Most of all four of our games were spent referring to the instructions to see what pieces were what and where they moved. To be honest, after four games and several hours we were still referring to the instructions for almost every move we made.I can see that there is the formation of a good strategy game here and given a lot more time I know I will memorise the pieces and what they do. I just won't be playing the wife.... and now I have to try explaining the game to my son.....What would be beneficial would be a set of cards for each piece that show the moves. I intend to print some out (a set for both players) for easier and quicker referral.
