A FINE TRIBUTE
This 5 CD, 63 track selection of recordings by one of Country Musics legends is a fine tribute indeed. It shows him progressing from being a good singer of songs, whether they be ballad, rock, honky tonk or just plain pop, to becoming a superstar. A well respected professional now sadly lost to us.CD 1 LONESOME ON`RY AND MEAN - My least favourite of this collection. Of its 13 tracks, 3 of which are bonuses, I preferred the almost gospel qualities of "You Can Have Her", along with "San Francisco Mabel Joy" (not as good as Mickey Newberry or John Denver) and "Me And Bobby McGee". Originally released in 1973.CD 2 THIS TIME - A marked improvement on the previous CD. 15 tracks including 5 bonus. This includes different styles of music, with a voice more mellow and richer than before. There are versions of Buddy Holly songs among the extra tracks. A 1974 release.CD 3 THE RAMBLIN` MAN - Again an improvement, with more familiar tracks than the previous CD`s. "I`m A Ramblin` Man", "Rainy Day Woman", "It`ll Be Her" and "Amanda" are my pick. 13 tracks and another 1974 release.CD 4 OL` WAYLON - Probably the best of the four solo CD`s, in my opinion. The memorable songs here are "Luckenbach, Texas", "Lucille" a surprisingly similar version to that of Kenny Rogers and just as good. "Sweet Caroline" follows along with a tribute to Elvis. In all 11 tracks recorded for this quality release in 1977.CD 5 WAYLON & WILLIE - 11 songs on this 1978 release, including 5 duets with Willie Nelson, 3 solos by Waylon and a further 3 solos by Willie. All top quality performances. One track in particular, "Mamas Don`t Let your Babies Grow up To Be Cowboys", although good, is not up to the Ed Bruce version, again, in my opinion. There is a second version of "Pick Up The Tempo", this time a duet, as opposed to the solo version on the "This Time" CD.Yes, the pounding rhythmical beat often attributed to many of Waylons recordings is abundantly prevalent. Before you realise it your fingers and or toes are tapping along with the song. A little under 3 hours pleasure. Brilliant value for money, you cannot lose!
