A powerful reminder to anyone who thinks design is primarily a visual pursuit, The Senses accompanies a major exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum that explores how space, materials, sound, and light affect the mind and body. Learn how contemporary designers, including Petra Blaisse, Bruce Mau, Malin+Goetz and many others, engage sensory experience. Multisensory design can solve problems and enhance life for everyone, including those with sensory disabilities. Featuring thematic essays on topics ranging from design for the table to tactile graphics, tactile sound, and visualizing the senses, this book is a call to action for multisensory design practice. The Senses: Design Beyond Vision is mandatory reading for students and professionals working in diverse fields, including products, interiors, graphics, interaction, sound, animation, and data visualization, or anyone seeking the widest possible understanding of design. The book, designed by David Genco with Ellen Lupton, is edited by Lupton and curator Andrea Lipps. Includes essays by Lupton, Lipps, Christopher Brosius, Hansel Bauman, Karen Kraskow, Binglei Yan, and Simon Kinnear. Review: Five Stars - Inspiring and moving! This is the syllabus for a museum exhibition
And I didn't understand that. I thought it was a more research-based neurobiology book. Although it was not what I expected, it was very well written, clearly illustrated, and offered insightful as well as provocative perspectives toward a more universal approach to design. Although humans are enormously visual creatures, there are more primitive areas of our brains (particularly olfactory and gustatory) that deeply affect how we perceive our world.

Wanted to love this
How odd that the designer of this book made a lot of it inaccessible to read. Tiny, dense typography, column after column. I'm a disability advocate, a person with a disability and a long time designer. I had high hopes for this book, and some of it was fabulous but I've had it for months and still can't pick it up to fully read because the accessibility of typography throughout the book is hard work for the eyes. Very hard work. Less text would have helped immensely. Larger, aired out font and leading, less density. Sad to have to say this.

The e-book is very hard to read
For a book on "Design beyond vision," the designer and writer(s) of the e-book forgot that it still takes vision to communicate the book's message. From hard-to-read yellow type on white, to white type on yellow, to dense blocks of text, I don't think this book is meant to be read, but a book to make those involved in its production feel good. I've just started this book. Unless I am soon gobsmacked with brilliance, I will probably put it aside for something more enjoyable or enlightening. Life's too short, and I have many other books to read.

amazing
It should be read, it should be taught. Full of useful thought to be applied to all design fields.

Absolute favourite book
This is an amazing book! My only criticism is that it’s a book about universal design and some of the text colour on background makes that tough! But the book is beautiful, full of amazing recent research and is a reasonable size for home and office. I love it!
