my 13-year-old grandson told me he enjoyed putting it together
Good choice for kids that like to know how it works why it works and end up with a finished product that works

A Unique and Frustrating Experience
Instructions take pictures at obscure angles, and frequently have the problem where the screws supplied are mislabeled or even just flat out wrong. Like they might mislabel a ST screw as a PWA or something. And the instructions also indicate that you're supposed to try and turn a very long screw through the hole, but... it bottoms out... and forcing it through would strip it. I eventually DID piece this thing together. But... let's just say HiWonder has a real gift for making their instructions transcend the limits of human logic. Support experience was mixed. The people I spoke to at LewanSoul were pretty decent and seemed very willing to help. I ran into an issue with thinking that some of the pieces were missing when in actuality they were tucked under a piece of Styrofoam that I mistakenly thought was the bottom of the Styrofoam case. But that's all the goodness I have to say on the subject. First, it doesn't help that Amazon's Byzantine support software portal has this web of obscure instructions that you have to follow to even contact the seller in the first place. Then when you DO finally get in touch with them, the seller messaging service is shown in this absolutely janky and bizarre horizontal read format. I mean I understand this is an international portal... but... you'd think that Amazon would have the decency and good sense to present conversations in the order to which users in their local region are accustomed. Then there's the issue with HiWonder calling their product 'Open Source'. It isn't. You see, the reason I purchased this product at all was so that I could have an AI brain interact with it. Same with a separate purchase I made with them. I had a Claude instance examine this piece up and down looking for a way to create an interaction so that it could operate the hand itself. It was the entire reason I bought this hand! But apparently the hand's firmware is locked ONLY to the knobs... you cannot write any real software to create an interaction without purchasing your own boards to bypass what is essentially a locked-down setup. The open source claim in this machinery is disingenuous at best. There is also some sort of a QA issue with the acrylic boards used to prop this thing up. In the picture there, you see a black coloring over the vertical supports... but the ones I received didn't have any coloring or painting on them whatsoever. You'd essentially have to paint these by hand -- supplies not included -- to get what you see in the picture. I came in to this product with very high hopes given the open source promise and... well... I wish I could say the experience was better than it was. But I spent a LOT more than the price tag there in order to get an AI brain to actually USE it... so... definitely NOT good value for the money.
