Career-spanning, 40-track compile of classics. desertcart.com The band that proclaimed itself "The Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World" has long since represented rock's most overarching confluence of art and commerce--with a distinct emphasis on the latter in recent decades--a notion this 40-track, five-decade-spanning anthology can't completely escape. While this is the first anthology to gather hits from the band's entire career, it's the early tunes that highlight one of the Stones' central ironies: virtually their entire "bad boy" reputation was built working for The Man. That original '60s musical arc bounded from '50s rock and R&B revivalism ("Not Fade Away," "The Last Time") to anti-Mop Top aggression ("Satisfaction," "Get Off My Cloud," "19th Nervous Breakdown") to proto-goth cynicism ("Paint It Black," "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby") and psychedelic minstrelsy ("She's a Rainbow," "Ruby Tuesday") to the epitome of blues-based cock rock ("Street Fighting Man," "Jumpin' Jack Flash") in quick succession. Wresting control of their own destinies--and future copyrights--at the end of the '60s, they'd spend the next 30 years largely recycling their earlier incarnation ad infinitum--their music sprinkled with occasionally successful forays into contemporary club and disco fodder ("Some Girls," "Shattered")--and resting on their well-paid laurels. Unfortunately, the listless quartet of new tracks that flesh out this collection seems little more than another business deal to hype their 2002-03 world tour, with "Don't Stop" arguably the weakest in a long string of post-'80s Stones McSingles. If Jagger seems typically detached here, Keith Richards injects some welcome, craggy warmth into the closing barroom lament, "Losing My Touch." But it's also a performance that suggests his legendary band has become little more to him than "The Greatest Day Job in the World." --Jerry McCulley Review: Forty Licks is pretty good - Forty Licks is an excellent collection of songs from one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. Even if you are not famillar with every Rolling Stones song, you will enjoy Forty Licks like I did. I enjoyed their older songs from the 60's and early 70's the best like Jumpin Jack Flash , Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, and Ruby Tuesday to name a few. I liked a lot more songs every This wonderful retrospective also includes hits like Miss You, Beast of Burden, and the song You Can't Always Get What You Want. I love this song, because I agree the message in the song. You can always get what you want, but if you try you get what you need. I would like to have seen Waiting on a Friend and Time Is On My Side included here. Start Me Up is a song that will always pump me up. It is one of my favorites and I'm glad to see it on here. Emotional Rescue is another great track from the early 80's. The four new tracks are pretty good. The best new track is the energetic song Don't Stop and the romantic Keys to your love. 40 Licks is a very enjoyable listen. Review: Excellent CD from an excellent seller - Love the Stones, and as much as i like the MP3 version on my phone, the sound quality on a CD is superior. I also appreciate the seller's accurate description of an excellent quality CD media and packaging.

Sound Quality
I am not a huge Stones fan that said. I would not recommend this particular compilation to anyone who has really never listened to the Stones. Although this album doesn’t claim to be a greatest hits album on the surface it appears to be. There are several tracks that have been remixed poorly it sounds as if the original songs were enhanced across the spectrum without any regard to the fact that the original recordings were performed and recorded with equipment that were by today’s standards greatly lacking in quality. The remix enhances the poor quality of the original equipment making the sound terribly distorted. Next for a typically young Stones listener trying to familiarize themselves with maybe the greatest Rock Band ever disappointed. This album has several songs that I would have left out because they are not representative of the band but rather are trendy songs from the era when they were released. And I find it lacking in many great songs that are maybe “B” side tracks but are in fact far superior to the “A” side track’s that made Top 40 lists. I am typically a Top 40 person but I often discover jewels on albums that are overlooked by the charts. This compilation missed out on a number of great songs combined with poor sound quality makes this a bit of a disappointment. However if you just want a few Rolling Stones songs in your collection it will work. If you are looking for music that moves your heart and soul both by the songs but sound quality as well you might want to look further. I know I will because the high points on this album only make me miss the ones that aren’t here and loathe the songs that disappointed me when they were released originally.

How come only "40 Licks" ?
Yes, I too could be whinning on and on about songs that were left out of this compilation but... c'mon, let's get real: 40 years of music, 2 cds, it's a little difficult to summarize such an illustrious career! I agree with another reviewer who said that this package could just as easily been "80 licks", and still, there would be songs missing... but remember this: this is THE ONLY compilation EVER to span the entire career of the Stones... and no other band still doing something has been around as long as they have... in my case, the only song I miss is "She is so cold"... i was looking forward to get that song, but... on the other hand, the inclusion of "Sympathy for the Devil", an often overlooked gem (it could very well be my fav Stones song...), more than makes up for that! 40 years of music on 2 CDs... difficult task... but as I said, if you're looking to get a good idea of the career of the greatest r'n'r band ever, this is the place to start: you get all the fundamentals and essentials... once you're done rockin' the bejesus out of it, you can dig further. Bottom Line: YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS! GET IT!

A great collection from the world's greatest rock band!
Just twenty minutes ago I returned from a day trip where I was driving in my car for a few hours, and I had this double CD playing back to back the whole time. I was reminded again how great Mick and the guys are, and what a sweet collection of hits "Forty Licks" is. This collection contains all The Stones' major hits throughout the years. I found myself singing out loud to such hits as "Satisfaction", "Wild Horses", "Let's Spend the Night Together", "Angie", "It's Only Rock and Roll", and other great Rolling Stones' classics. There is also some original songs written and recorded just for this collection. My favorite is "Don't Stop". It's a great rocker with Jagger belting out the sexy lyrics. Mick, Keith, and the rest of the guys are now in their late fifties, early sixties--and they're still writing and performing great rock and roll! "I know, It's only rock and roll, but I like it, like it, yes I do!!!"
