Classic film, what more can I say! ☺️

Great condition preowned dvd.It played with no jumping or freezing so I was able to enjoy one of my favourite older movies.It arrived in 2-3 days after purchase.So delivery is prompt and it was packaged well.

This film solidified something in me when I saw it for the first time as a 10 year old. Rewatching it now has given me a new perspective over nostalgia but reaffirms for me that movies with a compelling story will always remain timeless. Leonardo's acting genuinely made his scenes incredibly believable through his acting, and I definitely see myself in Gilbert as portrayed by superb cast choice Johnny Depp. I relate so hard to his way of life, and their relationship in this small town as a family is something that although isn't similar to my upbringing, really made me feel like a silent sibling going through life together for forever two hours.

Brilliant acting, great production and direction. This is a love story but in so many different ways. Its not the easiest film to watch, but its worth it in the end. Many beautiful moments. Amazing. Hard for me to relate to . Memorable

Johnny Depp's character Gilbert is a kind and selfless young man who, in his own words, wants to be "nice". His mother (Darlene Cates) has become morbidly obese since she became a widow, and is not able to carry out the usual duties of a parent. His brother, Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio) is, we presume, severely autistic. Gilbert appears to have no way out, but the arrival of Becky (Juliette Lewis) on the scene is enough to help the whole family begin to move on. For such a young actor at the time (1993), DiCaprio's performance as Arnie is utterly convincing. The portrayal of disability must be challenging for actors, and possibly for families affected to watch, but DiCaprio's Arnie is consistent in his physicality, voice, facial expressions, and even the ticks he uses swiping his nose. Darlene Cates' performance as mum Bonnie is truly memorable too, in that we see not only the stereotype, but more importantly the person suffering so much mentally and physically. I'd recommend this film for youngsters too - lots of thought-provoking stuff for them.

Excellent movie with superb acting of Leonardo DiCaprio as disabled boy & family love & pressure of caring

You have a choice with this film. You can watch it on a surface level or you can watch it deeply. I have done both. I enjoyed the surface stuff, then watched it again a few weeks later and was blown away by it. Leonardo De Caprio gives the performance of his life as a young boy with learning disabilities, its incredible. The film is so finely nuanced that tiny little stuff staggers you. It is beautifully shot with great performances all round - more then once it bought a huge lump to my throat. I consider this to be a great film, emotionally intelligent, understated and fine. Johnny Depp is frighteningly beautiful which adds to his performance as a slightly disaffected youth, bored witless but trying to do his best by his family. The scene where he loses it and slaps his learning disabled brother is almost unbearable. The ending is, well, great. Buy this, curl up on the couch and watch it deeply, its incredibly well observed - just dont miss the point

I put off watching this film for a long time because (a) there was a lot of hype around it and (b) I don't really like Johnny Depp. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. This is a tale of a highly complex and difficult family set-up where the oldest son, Gilbert Grape aka Depp, is a real unselfish hero and puts the very challenging and dysfunctional family first. Great show and would thoroughly recommend it. Depp is really great – superlative performance. Juliet Lewis is brilliant too. Although DiCaprio's performance was Oscar-nominated, widely lauded and is in fact really good, I felt that it somehow lacked something or was slightly overdone or contrived. The late Darlene Cate was truly amazing as the obese mother. Overall, a great piece of cinema based on a great story. Go watch.

Bonjour j'ai acheté le DVD et malheureusement j'ai remarqué que il n'était pas un français alors que il ne mentionne pas le fait qu'il n'est seulement que en anglais un petit peu déçu.

"Gilbert Grape" est pour moi le film le plus réussi de Lasse Hallström.Très fidèle au roman de Peter Hedges dont il est tiré il nous dépeint avec tout à la fois réalisme, lyrisme et une certaine magie une famille d'une Amérique profonde où tous les maux semblent avoir été réunis (une mère obèse, un frère aîné sur les épaules duquel tout repose depuis que le père s'est pendu, un jeune frère atteint de graves troubles mentaux, des conditions de vie précaires dans une maison qui menace à tout moment de s'effondrer) et où pourtant le maître mot est l'amour, le lien serré existant entre tous ces personnages (il faut également ajouter deux sœurs et un frère qui a préférer partir).Ce film touchant, très émouvant, ne tombe jamais dans le mélodramatique et nous offre à chaque fois une grande leçon d'humanité et d'espoir en la vie. On en ressort grandi, bouleversé, émerveillé.Toutes les comédiennes et tous les comédiens, même ceux ayant un rôle "secondaire", sont magnifiques. Johnny Depp rayonne d'humanité, Leonardo di Caprio est époustouflant dans le rôle plus que difficile du jeune homme atteint de grave déficience mentale (à 18 ans il a un cerveau d'un enfant de 5 ans) tout comme Darlene Cates qui incarne avec maestria le rôle de la mère obèse mais pétrie d'amour pour tous ses enfants. Sans oublier Juliette Lewis, Mary Steenburgen,.... Pour être honnête il faudrait tous les citer.Un chef d'œuvre à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte.

Great film and actor lm very happy with the seller and product

Ich konnte es kaum erwarten, diesen Film in unseren DVD-Player zu legen. Wie immer pünktlich und zuverlässig, durch die exakte Koordinierung der Firma Amazon, geliefert. Ein sehr emotionaler Film verkörpert durch zwei ganz tolle Schauspieler Johnny Depp und Leonardo Dicaprio. Ich persönlich fand es sehr ergreifend wie sich Gilbert um seine Familie, besonders um seinen behinderten Bruder Arnie kümmert. Gilbert hat ein schweres Leben, da er ja in gewisser Hinsicht die Vaterrolle in der Familie, nach dem Freitod seines Vaters, ersetzen muss. Tief bewegt und sehr nachdenklich gestimmt hat mich die Darstellung der Mutter mit ihrem enormen Übergewicht, bedingt duch ungesunde Ernährung aber ich glaube, die Frau hat sich nach dem Freitod des Mannes aufgegeben, musste aber sich selbst eingestehen eine Witzfigur zu sein. Wie verzweifelt musste diese Frau gewesen sein. Doch trotz ihrer körperlichen Beeinträchtigung hat Sie nicht die Liebe und die Sorge um ihre Kinder vergessen. Das Ende des Filmes war auch sehr erdrückend als die Kinder sich dazu entschieden haben das Haus, ein Lebenswerk ihrer Eltern, zusammen mit der toten Mutter zu verbrennen. Dieser Film gibt sehr viel zum Nachdenken, hat etwas zeitloses in seiner Handlung und ist wirklich empfehlenswert.
