The proverbial "BANG" for the buck...
Let me start by saying that yesterday (4/29)I was perusing sites in search of a decent, reasonably priced speaker setup. I ran across this model, and scoped it here at Amazon. After a bit of research, I decided to take the plunge ... and I placed my online order at 2 in the afternoon. Talk about fast and efficient ... they arrived this morning (4/30), no less than 18 hours after I submitted the order. I didn't even request overnight delivery, just the standard 3 day shipping. Kudos to Amazon for the lightning quick delivery. I just hooked the speakers up a half hour ago, and right out of the box I can only say ... WOW! The design is even sleeker than I thought, and the subwoofer is also as streamlined as possible. A very handsome unit, with space economy at a premium. Ok ... so, they arrived in the blink of an eye, and they look fantastic... but, how do they sound, right? The sound surpasses the delivery and style raves! I decided to test drive the speakers by spinning one of my favorite discs: Blondie's "Parallel Lines" I felt one song in particular, "Fade Away And Radiate" would be as accurate a barometer of the capabilities of the sound as I could find. And I'm pleased to report that the ATP3 kicked major butt. The song has a very deep bass line, and thundering bass drum hits during the intro. I left the bass and treble controls at the neutral (middle) position, and turned the song up. The subwoofer handled the drum and bass quite well, and the clarity of the highs and vocals was outstanding. A very neat balance, with nothing getting overwhelmed or drowned out. I am a musician, and the great majority of my work on the PC centers around music... and these speakers are definitely CAPABLE of delivering the deep, rich sound one would expect to find on a more conventional stereo setup... After that song, I decided to crank up the volume, bass and treble. The results were nothing short of outstanding. This system can handle it, I assure you. I purchased mine yesterday at $64.00 ... I see that now the price is even lowewr. My advice to those who are considering buying this is GET THEM! They perform as well as speakers you might pay twice as much for. These are a frickin' STEAL at the current price. Go for it, you will NOT be disappointed.

Absolutes
I love these speakers so much that I bought another set five years after my first set. The original set still works and am going to have my daughter set them up with their laptop. What is different with these is there isn't really an on/off switch like my old ones. My older ones had a push in equals ON , push out equals OFF. There is a green indicator light when you turn the master gain to about seven O clock to let you know that they are indeed on. I don't like the newer knobs because the don't have a dot like my old ones to let you know where Half-way is. My older set you had to connect the positive an negative wires to the back of the sub-woofer if I recall correctly. These were a breeze to set-up. Very straight forward can tell they actually came up with some better design feature to increase the functionality of the product. The sound is amazing all the way around. Hey for some speakers for computer or an additional device I would recommend these immediately since I own two sets now. My Ex-wife has the other pair and they still work. My neighbors used to ask me to try and keep it down between certain hours due to the Bass. Anyways I would think some type of Equalization type circuit with adjustor would be a dream I would have about these , but might try some software to get the exact sound I want. Overall I am very happy so far , just hope nothing goes wrong with these.

Absolute best speakers, don't buy them from the same seller I did.
These are the absolute best speakers for your computer... however, the seller did a TERRIBLE job packing them and they arrived (and returned) broken.

Nice if you are looking for bass, not vocals...
Let me start off by saying that if you are looking for speakers that are going to produce an amazing amount of bass, then look no further. You have found your speakers. Click on Add to cart and you are good to go. However, if you are looking for well balanced speakers for vocal driven music (i.e. musicals or opera, or even some pop music) then these aren't the best bet. All music sounds good with these speakers -- if you are listening to it loudly. I get up really early and don't want to disturb my wife who likes to sleep a bit later. I found that if I listened to a CD or Mp3 quietly, then the lyrics got lost. If I turn up the volume - an encourage my wife to leave - then everything is fine. All and all, I think these are great spreakers if you are looking to listen to music loudly or music with a lot of bass, otherwise, I would recommend going with something else.

Good Quality for a Good Price
I don't play games or require surround sound on my laptop, but I DO like to turn on Internet Radio at a low to moderate volume while I work, and the Polk Audio speakers in my laptop just weren't cutting it. Based on other reviews, and some looking around, I opted for this system, with no regrets at all. Sound quality is terrific, with good highs and thumping lows that make jazz, blues, or talk radio sound as good as sitting in the studio. I've not had any problems with highs sputtering or dropping out, but then, I'm not prone to cranking it up terribly high when listening to radio. I have noticed a tendency when playing DVDs to need to knock the sound up a bit, but that's no great hassle. I did have a bit of a problem with squeal and a somewhat muted sound, until I went into the Volume Control menu on my laptop and muted both the microphone and telephone functions -- sound improved MARKEDLY (I had a similar issue with the Altec Lansing 220 system, my "backup" speakers). So if it seems you're always hearing your cooling fan amplified, check those functions and knock 'em down a notch or two, or mute them altogether. I also tend to get a slight buzz in the speakers if I leave them plugged in, even when the computer is off. Typical of Altec Lansing, setup is a breeze, with everything color coded so you don't lose your place. The speakers look suitable cool sitting on your desk, almost like two hovercraft, with good volume controls on the right speaker that aren't too touchy. I fussed a bit with the subwoofer to find a place where I wouldn't kick it over or muffle it on a carpeted floor (I eventually settled for placing it on a piece of cardboard under the desk so it wouldn't fire right into the rug). Amazon has some of the best prices going on this set of speakers, and while it doesn't qualify for Super Saver Shipping, you'll still pay less for them than you might at Best Buy or Staples. I know others make demands on their speakers for a wide variety of reasons -- gaming, sound editing, or what have you -- but for a music listener, these babies work just fine.

GREAT SOUND!
These speakers have been around for a while and have been discontinued, but they are worth searching for. I had pretty much narrowed down my choices and had decided on a pair of Logitech Z623, which I consider to be one of the better of the new crop of speakers. I spotted a pair of these Altecs on here and, being a big Altec fan, I ordered them. They are head and shoulders above anything on the market today! The highs are open and spacious, the mid-range clear and accurate, and the lows are never muddy; in short, they are sonically accurate. I can listen to them all day with no audio fatigue. If you can find a pair, buy them, you won't be disappointed.

Exceeded my expectations
I don't usually write reviews but when I started looking for some speakers I read some favorable reviews on this product. When it finally arrived and I hooked it up, and WOW , it was just so powerful I couldn't believe it. I have a new home theater system I just setup and I have to say I wish it was as robust as this set of speakers. For the price of these speakers you will certainly get your moneys worth. Brings new life to some of my old CD's. Great product, I highly recommend it.

WOW READ THIS
I was not sure what I was getting when I purchased this speaker system because how can you buy somthing that is used for sound and not even know what it sounds like. BUT I did anyway and am I glad I did, these sound incredible. I played some CD's and some games on my computer with them and was taken back by what came out of them. THIS IS NOT A CHEAP THUMP THUMP BOX, IT IS A GREAT SOUNDING LOW, MID, & HIGH MIX. I cant wait to rent a DVD and play it in my G4 tonight.
