The price that I paid was hefty BUT if you are a fan and have admiration of European painting of the 19th century academic / traditional style then this book is for you and is well worth the price. Jean Auguste -Dominique Ingres was a towering figure for over 50 years as the premier painter of the prominent, beautiful, rich and famous men and woman of his time as this book lovingly details. As this remarkable book shows his output of work was prolific comprising many genres and subjects. More than just a coffee table book with great pictures {though the plates shown are numerous and of high quality} its narrative of the artist's long life span {1780- 1867} career and times is well researched in detailing his extremely long and fruitful artistic life and work. The portrait on the book's dust jacket is of the Princesse de Broglie completed between 1853 -55 {when he was aged 73 -75 } and is one of the artist 's signiture works that highlights one of the great beauties of the era and hangs in glory in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in N.Y.C. I purchased a beautifully, framed and matted high quality large scale copy of this picture at an estate sale 2 years ago and it hangs prominently in my living room over the fire place - the focal point of my home. I became interested in knowing more about Ingres after that purchase. This book was an interesting if comprehensive read coupled with the excellent quality color plates and I give it a n enthusiastic 5 star rating - Highly Recommended.

This is a gorgeous book by one of the truly great French Masters. Everything is there - his glorious painting of the emperor - Napoleon on his throne, all the great portraits, the religious works, his exotic harem scenes and the history paintings. Plenty of his great pencil drawings as well.
