Intuitive Composition
Read this book years ago and just recently got my own copy. Had forgotten how many of the thoughts expressed in this book applied to my own painting style. Painting the obvious can be learned, but finding yourself in the subject and expressing that thru painting is not so easy. Handel simplifies not only the emotional connection, but the elements that take you to better paintings. A book that I'll be quoting time and again.

Feeling the subject
Intuitive...get inside of your subject...live it for a moment..or two..that is what Albert can do.

Heady Material
Always enjoy the picture plates by Albert. This is some intense reading and concepts. Must be digested in small bites.

Good book but not what I was looking for regarding composition. Not as informative as I had hoped.

Intuitive Composition.
As an artist I`ve been fortunate in having a good sense of composition so it`s the one part of making paintings I never had to worry about unduly, however having to teach others has obliged me to consider how to explain and demonstrate the subject. This book is a fairly helpful reference tool for me; illustrated with over 100 full-colour paintings and studies by Albert Handell himself each painting is accompanied by a description explaining particular aspects of the composition; it isn`t a “how to” book or step-by-step guide – it simply offers advice and useful examples to assist the student in making balanced and well-judged decisions using the elements of shape, colour, pattern and tone presented by the subject. All the work is representational, with a good mix of figures, landscape, buildings and still life – in fact it showcases Handell`s work very well – aside from being helpful study material.Probably a book for the novice artist who has attained some experience and competence with drawing and painting seeking to strengthen compositional skills without resorting to academic formulae – it will be useful for some, but others may need more formal instruction than this book offers to develop confidence in constructing a painting.A nice book to leaf through and certainly of some use, depending on the needs of the individual.
