The "Dead Space" Solution: Premium Utility Without the Weight of Wood or Metal
If you own a Ford Transit, you know that the lower cavities of the rear doors are essentially wasted space or, at best, a place where dirt accumulates. we recently installed the VanEssential Rear Door Lower Storage Panels, and after a 500-mile shake-out trip, I can confidently say this is one of the most functional upgrades you can make to a mid or high-roof Transit and at a fair price. 1. Material Science: Durability vs. Weight Most DIYers go for 1/4" plywood or CNC-cut aluminum for door panels. While those look great, they add weight and can rattle. These VanEssential panels are made from a high-quality, automotive-grade fabric (honeycomb ripstop) that feels incredibly durable. They are stiff enough to hold their shape but flexible enough to handle the vibration of the road without a sound. 2. Storage Layout & Capacity The "Pair" configuration is smartly designed. The Mesh Pockets: These are deep. I’ve been using them for leveling blocks, recovery straps, and even wet shoes. The mesh is heavy-duty—not the flimsy stuff that tears on a zipper. The Molle Webbing: This is where the panels win. Being able to customize the exterior with additional pouches for tools or first-aid kits makes the rear of the van feel like an organized workshop rather than a cluttered trunk. 3. The Installation (Transit Specific) Installation is straightforward, but here is a tip: Don’t rush the self-tapping screws. VanEssential provides the hardware, and the fitment for the Ford Transit is laser-accurate. They align perfectly with the factory door ribs. Note: If you have already insulated your doors with Thinsulate or Havlock wool, these panels actually help "compress" the insulation slightly, providing a cleaner finish than flat boards. 4. Aesthetic & Thermal Benefits Beyond storage, these panels provide a finished look to the van. The black/grey colorway is professional and hides the inevitable scuffs from loading and unloading gear. Additionally, the fabric provides a slight thermal break compared to bare metal doors, which helps (minimally) with temperature regulation in the sleeping area. Pros: Quiet: Zero rattling, even on washboard gravel roads. Lightweight: Negligible impact on door hinge wear. Customizable: The Molle system grows with your needs. Fitment: Specifically tailored for the Transit’s unique door geometry. Cons: Permanent Mod: You are drilling into the door ribs, so make sure your placement is exactly where you want it. Price: It’s an investment compared to a DIY board, but the time saved on sewing/stapling pockets yourself makes it worth the premium. Final Verdict: If you’re tired of digging through bins for your "quick-grab" items, these panels are the answer. They turn the most underutilized part of a Transit into a high-utility storage hub. High-quality, thoughtfully engineered, and looks "factory."

Vanessential barn door storage
Very happy with these. Bit of an alternative to Van Der Moon storage. They are cheaper but are very good quality. Only bad point is you have to make holes through the fabric to secure to van doors. Would definitely recommend though.

Great addition to my van
Love these! Takes all of my smaller, less frequently used gear, and puts them front and center for easy retrieval (rather than fishing thru bins)

Great fit
Fit perfectly although the straps holding the pouches closed could be better designed
