My favorite safe cutter
If you frequently open boxes or break down cardboard for recycling, the Slice Manual Carton Cutter is a noteworthy tool to consider. Leveraging a ceramic blade designed to last longer than traditional metal blades, this cutter focuses on safety, durability, and user comfort.Key FeaturesCeramic Blade TechnologyThe biggest selling point of Slice tools is their ceramic blade, which the company claims lasts up to 11 times longer than standard steel. In practice, these blades tend to stay sharp for significantly longer, meaning you won’t have to replace the blade nearly as often.Ceramic is also chemically inert and never rusts, so it’s low-maintenance even if you’re cutting through slightly damp or sticky materials.Safety-First DesignUnlike a typical metal box cutter, the Slice blade features rounded tips and a proprietary grind, which makes accidental skin contact less likely to cause deep cuts. The manual slider mechanism lets you adjust the blade’s length—usually between a very short “exposed” length for shallow cuts and a slightly longer setting for deeper cuts.Compact, Ergonomic BuildThe cutter’s small, lightweight body is easy to hold and maneuver, especially when slicing through tough or awkwardly shaped packaging.A textured grip or slight ridging often found on Slice products helps prevent slips, offering better control for precise cutting.Blade Retraction OptionsSlice offers different styles: some are manual retraction (you push the slider up and it stays), while others have auto-retraction (the blade retracts when not in use). This specific model, the Manual Carton Cutter, stays out until you retract it yourself—ideal for longer cuts but requires you to remember to retract for maximum safety.PerformanceCutting Efficiency: It slices through most standard cardboard boxes with minimal effort. The ceramic blade can also handle materials like plastic wrap and packaging tape.Longevity: True to the claims, the blade remains sharp through multiple heavy-use sessions. While the exact lifespan depends on frequency and type of use, most users find they replace blades far less often than with metal alternatives.Precision: The short blade exposure ensures cleaner, more controlled cuts and helps prevent accidental slicing through layers you don’t intend to cut.Pros & ConsProsLong-Lasting Blade: Ceramic edges stay sharp far longer than standard metal.Rust-Free & Low Maintenance: Ideal for work environments where tools might get damp or dirty.Safety-Oriented: Rounded blade tips and short extension reduce risks of accidental deep cuts.Ergonomic & Lightweight: Comfortable to hold, making repetitive cutting less fatiguing.ConsNot for Heavy-Duty Materials: If you frequently cut very thick or tough materials (like heavy plastic or thick foam), you may need a heavier-duty knife.Manual Retraction: You have to consciously retract the blade each time for safety—some might prefer auto-retraction models.Higher Initial Cost: Ceramic-blade cutters can be pricier upfront compared to basic metal utility knives, but lower blade replacement frequency can offset this over time.Final ThoughtsThe Slice Manual Carton Cutter excels if you’re seeking a safer, longer-lasting box cutter for everyday tasks. Its ceramic blade design reduces the frequency of blade replacements and lowers the risk of deep accidental cuts, all while delivering clean slices through standard cardboard and packing materials. While it may not be the best choice for extremely heavy-duty applications, its ergonomic build and easy handling make it a top pick for home or workplace environments where safety and convenience are paramount.Highly recommended for those who open and break down boxes regularly, or anyone who values the added safety features and long life of a ceramic blade.

great safer blade
This ceramic box cutter is a good alternative to steel blade. I have been using these box cutter for a couple of years now and I only had to replace blades once so far. I use them daily to cut open boxes and slice open packaging in a warehouse and they do the job. I wouldn't recommend this for very heavy duty use. The blade is just sharp enough to do what I need to do but not sharp enough to cause too much harm if I make a mistake. I have converted a couple of coworkers to use these blades and they said they will never go back to steel blades again. Overall this box cutter is great but the only downfall is the orange part is made of plastic and is warn down over time where it hits the box as it cuts. Only time will tell if it will ware down too much to make it unusable

Works great and much safer than traditional blades
We have multiple products from Slice and they’re all terrific. They work really well and are much safer than traditional blades. Packing tape adhesive doesn’t stick to the blade, which is a really nice bonus.

Sharper than slice pen, scissor, or xacto style knives
Note the Amazon images provided slice related to the product state “ Reinforced nylon tip, Fully retractable, Locks into position” in one image. There is absolutely no lock feature that restrains movement of plastic housing in a “locking capacity”. The slide-able orange plastic blade housing has a protruding directional stop tab feature provided to engage a notch in the aluminum sheath/sleeve. That is not a lock. That is a positive stop in technical terms, limiting extension of blade housing from the aluminum sheath. The plastic tab-like feature on the orange plastic blade housing engages a notch when in the blade extracted position to prevent you from pushing the orange blade housing completely out of the “front” of the aluminum housing/sheath.If you apply force and hold it in a variety of ways, the orange blade housing can push back through the aluminum housing, sort of effectively retracting. You can use fingers to hold the orange portion that protrudes from the aluminum housing when cutting or use an alternate finger while holding it to prevent the orange housing from sliding out the back of the aluminum sleeve while cutting or if using blade to puncture before cutting. Really depends on how you hold the product and what you’re cutting and your particular use case and method, or even whether you start with the blade extending over the edge of a piece of material of sorts, versus puncturing something like a cardboard box before cutting, which would necessitate preventing the orange housing from being pushed right out the back of the aluminum sleeve, or to the point the blade is no longer visible before pushing blade into a material before slicing it with a cutting motion.Bought quite a variety of sliced products recently. This blade is definitely the sharpest of the lot that I tried from scissors to Pen style knives to box cutters of different types by the slice company.I could feel the sharpness of this slice blade compared to the other slice blades that seemed much more dull out of their packages, in comparisonCuriously for cutting cardboard boxes it seems like it wouldn’t need to be as precisely sharp as an X-Acto -like knife blade by slice should be for precision craft cutting but is notably sharper to the touch than the blade for their x-Acto- like and pen knife’s or scissors. Would have liked if their other products had an initial sharpness comparable to this blade. It was among the products by slice that I kept and like. However, it would be nice if there was a manner in which to at least retract the blade housing portion and have it stop (even with a hemisphere like bump tat fell into a detention in the Housing instead of being variable to the point you can pull it right out the other end without limitation.Yes, I realize you do need to be able to pull it out one end or the other two swap blades. But that does not mean it would not be possible to have it contain a feature that would provide a stop for retracted storage that could be defeated In order to exchange the bladeIt would be nice if it had a lock feature or spring capability also for the blade extracted use condition. For now the feature consists of a push action in until a tab hits the stop notch in the aluminum housing to extract blade for use. u can push it back any amount you want for less (variable) blade exposure or to hide blade or until the hounding comes right out the other side.So in a pocket where the orange plastic blade housing portion lands within the aluminum sheath / sleeve or how long it stays in a retraced (unlockable) position until it gets pushed back out the other end if it gets disturbed and moved around I’m not sure-subject to contact with other objects and movement ….., but mine will sit on the shelf or in a cupboard and not generally being in a pocket anyway, but I think some additional features would be nice for the price compared to other products that are much cheaper .May use tape or engineer my own feature to achieve any of the above mentioned goals.Nice and seemingly well-made made with a sharper blade and their other product seem to offer out of the box but opportunity to enhance. Slice could even offer a small push tab that you could engage with a finger tip or fingernail at the blade end that would pop out and hold the blade into position for use but through gentle depression of the tab that is flexible at the end protruding from the housing would allow you to push it beneath the surface of the aluminum sheath in order to retract it for storage. Much like many products use for many reasons. Including on knives. It is a tooling change that does not require any extra pieces or parts to increase the thickness locally and provide a feature for depression and engagement and disengagement.

Best box cutter by far
If you need to open boxes, this is the best knife I’ve found. Tape DOES NOT stick to the blade - I’ve cut open hundreds and it is still as clean as the day I got it. It doesn’t really dull, either: besides boxes I’ve scored drywall, marked wood, and etched glass and the blade is as effective as ever. It doesn’t really matter that it’s not “sharp”, because the blade is so hard that it will cut through things regardless. And it is skin safe for the most part, you can’t cut yourself without really doing something dangerous. Is this the best knife ever? Despite everything above, no - the blade is too short, and I do miss having a tip to poke through plastics. But if you’re opening boxes daily, this is the best knife I’ve found by a wide margin.
