Solid Scanner — Built Tough and Packed With Real Tools
The XTOOL D5S is the kind of scanner every guy should have in his garage. It’s fast, accurate, and feels like a legit piece of equipment, not one of those cheap plastic toys. The interface is clean, the touchscreen responds instantly, and the 16 reset functions actually work — no fluff. I’ve used it on multiple vehicles now, and it pulls codes quick, gives clear explanations, and lets me handle resets without running to a shop. The build quality is solid, the cable connections feel secure, and the whole unit has that “I can trust this” vibe. If you want a scanner that saves time, saves money, and makes you look like you know exactly what you’re doing under the hood, this one delivers.

A great diagnostic tool for any toolbox
Update: I’ve been able to use this scanner a bit now and it has impressed me quite a bit. The screen is clear and bright, touch controls are responsive and navigating menus is a breeze. Outside of Amazon sending me a used and returned unit it has performed flawlessly. It pulls up codes pretty quickly, though it takes a bit to scan through the different modules, and the live data is butter smooth and updates very quickly. This scanner easily rivals my old Snap-On scanner, the Solus Pro, which cost thousands of dollars when I bought it about 10 years ago. So why buy this scanner if I have a pro grade scanner? Pretty simple: rechargeable battery, smaller and more compact size, and free updates! Honestly, I’m very satisfied with this scanner. It’s updated twice in the past week and they haven’t cost me a dime. Good luck getting that kind of service with something like my Solus Pro. Those updates still cost hundreds of dollars. Another reason I like this scanner? Customer service. An XTOOL rep saw my initial review and reached out to me about it. We have gone back and forth a bit in the past week and they are going to try to make it right even though it was a failing on Amazons part. Where are you getting this kind of service anywhere else? As a former career mechanic, I highly recommend this scanner or any of their other scanners. You should also know that this scanner will recharge off of the vehicles OBD2 port while it’s plugged in, so you don’t have to worry about the battery dying as you’re diagnosing the vehicle or having an extra charging cable running to the scanner. That’s fantastic for viewing live data as someone else drives the vehicle. Initial review: I received a previously used scanner. It was registered to Herman, though he was probably not the Munster. I also have their WiFi network information and everything else they put into this scanner. I’m not sure why they returned it after using it on 2-28-25 on an Infiniti, but they did. While I am marking this review at 3 stars, I understand that it is unlikely an issue with the seller. I did delete the previous user and then updated the scanner, it took a while since it needed a system update and 41 module updates, but it went pretty quickly. You should know that in the “update” menu there is an update all button, but it is only labeled “updates”. I had started to update them individually before I pressed it, not knowing what it would do. Did you expect me to read the instructions? I’m not sure if I should return this or just complain to Amazon or the seller, see what they know about this, but I do need a scanner and so far this is pretty quick to navigate the different menus and should perform well. So far I haven’t used it, but I will at least give it a shot before I do anything else. It does seem well made.

Very good OBD data scanner for the price
High capability touch screen scanner for the price Can display live real time sensor data you can view while the vehicle is running, which included numerous sensors and ECM inputs and outputs that I was not expecting. The screen layout / navigation is a little odd and has redundant options. The power on, shutdown and update options are inconvenient every time I use it. But that's minor stuff. it was still very worth it for the diagnostics and repairs I have done with it.

Easy to use and good value for the money.
I really, REALLY, did NOT want to purchase this scanner. I'm a former professional auto technician and ASE Certified Master Technician. And while I no longer make my living as an auto tech, I still work on cars, a lot, as a hobby and for friends and family. I don't need a fancy or expensive scanner, just something to pull the codes and, maybe, provide live data. I've been getting along just fine with the Ancel FX2000 i purchased on Amazon several years ago. But i recently picked up a car that required extensive engine service and had been sitting for several years. After the mechanical engine repairs were completed, the check engine light came on, with code P0315, "Crankshaft Position System Variation Not Learned". i attempted driving the car for several weeks, hoping the Engine Control Unit (ECU) would re-learn the crankshaft position sensor, but no matter how much I drove the car, the code persisted. It became clear I needed to either take it to the dealer or a mechanic, and pay them to perform the Crankshaft Position Relearn procedure, or buy a scanner with the needed capability and do it myself. As an avowed DIYer, I decided to purchase the XTool D5S, primarily because it was the lowest price scanner with relearn functions that I could find. It arrived the next day, and I charged it just enough to get it to power up. It uses a touchscreen interface, which is nice, and the menus are easily navigable, with virtually no Chinese-lish. It does require a Wi-Fi connection and setting up an "account" with XTools before allowing use of the diagnostic functions. Within minutes of connecting the scanner to the car, I performed the Crankshaft Variation Relearn procedure and the check engine light was off. The ECU was finally happy. Overall, it's a very nice unit, of good quality and price that I'm sure will last many years. So, solid four stars; would have been five but for the required WiFi setup and on-line registration which, in my opinion, should not really be necessary.

Well made and full featured
I bought this solely for my daughter's car since she is away at school. The price point was right and it gives her the ability to scan her vehicle if the check engine light comes on. She had that happen and we found that the cheap bluetooth scanner I had in her glove box wouldn’t read the active code because it was a TCM and not an ECU code, time to upgrade. She can keep this in her car and just call me with the code info in case the check engine light comes on. Certainly cheaper than a single trip to the dealer for diagnosis. I have another Xtool scanner at the house so I am familiar with the interface and can talk her through pulling data and codes, although it is pretty intuitive. This scanner also has quick access to the readiness tests to see if the vehicle is ready for state emissions testing. It has live data screens as well so we can see what the vehicle is doing in real time. The scanner is very compact but the screen is bright enough to read without issue. The updates downloaded pretty quickly and it seems durable enough for our use. The tablet unit has a cover over the USB C charging port and an SD slot. I’m not sure what the SD slot is for as all of the available updates were able to download directly to the tablet. It has rubber on the edges and feels durable, not cheap. Some scan tools require a subscription per VIN or require a subscription to get updates after a few years. That isn’t the case with this reader. I’m glad I don’t have to worry about buying anything for a scanner that hopefully isn’t used too often. It also doesn’t require an internet connection to use it, just to download updates and send reports. With the easy of use of the scanner I may just end up with one in every vehicle.
