It works like a charm. You just connect your router and your devices and automatically get four extra ports. The USB power can come from as low as the usual notebook USB output or even the router itself.

I just couldn't justify carrying around a conventional switch and another tranformer all the time -- especially since I already have two laptops and a ton of other gear in my case.This unit was the perfect solution. Compact, lightweight and USB powered. It worked perfectly right out of the box. I combined it with a small retractable LAN cable (Belkin is the one I purchased, but others may be better) and one longer conventional LAN cable for a complete solution. You may also want a USB extension cord to cover all possibilities for locating the box farther away from your laptop.The only improvement I can imagine (to give it a 5 star instead) would be using a standard USB or Mini-USB connector instead of the odd/proprietary cable they provide. The connector is standard USB at the computer end, but a rounded pin configuration at the box end. Still, I'm quite happy with this clever little unit.

Why aren't there more products like this?It is about the size of a credit card (give or take a bit, I didn't actually measure...) and maybe an inch thick.Plugs into the USB port for power.Easy carry in my bag when bringing my laptop around my facility. If I need to tap into an existing computers LAN connection just pull this out with a couple of cables, plug it into USB and done!Other reviewers have mentioned a micro USB (or even full size) to plug in to the unit would have been better, more easily replaceable if needed.

THIS DOES NOT HAVE PORT MIRRORING!!!!!!I accidentally ordered this because I thought it was the version with Port Mirroring. The one with port mirroring has the same part number except there isn't a U at the end. I missed that detail.With that being said, it's a switch. Nothing fancy. I wish it had a micro usb port instead of a round plug for power. Just one more cable to carry around. I'd give it 5 stars if it used a standard USB cable.

I service various enterprise server and storage systems. I bought this because servicing EMC Gen1 VNX systems requires connecting my service laptop to both storage processors through a switch (Gen2 systems are internally switched) but often there is no electrical outlets nearby that I canplug my switch into. This solves that problem perfectly as it gets its power from any USB port on my laptop.

Does the job well and great having a hub that is powered by USB.

This is exactly what I was looking for, and it works great when I need to connect my laptop or iPad into a customer's network.

I needed a few more ethernet ports in one of my A/V cabinets. I bought this, plugged it into one of the USB ports on the back on a TiVo to power it, plugged in the ethernet devices and was up and running in minutes.There was no need to waste a plug point on a power strip when I have devices in my A/V cabinet that have unused USB ports.A Blu-Ray quality video stream takes up at most 25Mbps, so there's no need for a gigabit ethernet switch in the back of my A/V cabinet.
