Up, Down, and Around

If your toddler is like mine and must read multiple books before a nap or bedtime, this is a good one to add to your collection. It's a short book but also fun, educational and cute. My toddler loves it and so do !

This book is fantastic! My kids love it, and it's possible that I love it even more than they do. The text is very predictable and alliterative, so kids can recite it after just a couple readings. My emerging reader finds the repetition helpful so that she can read the entire book rather quickly. Basically, it introduces veggies that grow up, down, and around in a climbing pattern, grouped in alliterative families (ex: "Corn grows up. Carrots grow down. Cucumbers climb around and around."). It's very educational to show kids how their food grows!The pictures are utterly delightful, with lots of bugs and critters adorably interacting with the plants (a gardener's nightmare, yes, but a reality just the same, and a way for kids to realize that humans don't have sole access to the garden). The content gets kids (and adults) psyched for gardening season and may even introduce some veggies that they haven't thought to try before. My seven-year-old and I like to read it just for the hype, imagining a garden that's so full and thriving that our arms overflow with our harvest!This book is one that I like to give to families with young children--it's a gem!

I teach pre-k and this was a great addition to our plant study theme. The illustrations were great!

This book is great in so many ways. My 15 mo. old loves it because it has a fun rhythm to it and because he hunts for little things on each page (the kitty, the dog, the butterflies, the vegetables). I like it because it shows kids how plants grow "Corn grows up. Carrots grow down. Cucumbers climb around and around. Peppers grow up. Potatoes grow down. Pumpkins vine around and around...." I also like that the children are gardening with their dad, and that this is (apparently) an organic garden...happy bugs, butterflies, worms, and birds are shown ALL over the plants (in a cute way, and a real way...not a gross way). At the end the family harvests their veggies and creates a veggie stew. Fabulous, positive book...makes natural gardening look fun, and kids learn about plants, too!

My two-year old granddaughter loves this book. Not so much for the prose but for the illustrations which allow us to point to so many things -- the little girl who looks like her, the little boy who is like her friend, the dog who is like her puppy, the bunny, the daddy, the scarecrow, bare feet, the many kinds of bugs,etc. It takes us a long time to get through the "bug" book but she happily remains still throughout and it is the one she wants read to her at each story time. I hope that the author and the illustrator collaborate again in the future on more children's books.

I liked this book. The rhyming text is good for my preschoolers and the book is not very long. We read it twice and reached up. bent down and twirled around when the words were mentioned. They enjoyed it very much and could remember which vegetables grew which way.

I bought this as a birthday gift for our 2 year old grand niece who loves to "read". Her books are her favorite toys so I knew she would be fascinated with all the wonderful things to see in the beautifully done illustrations. The older kids at the birthday party spent quite a while looking at the book, challenging each other to find all the things in the pictures. Highly recommend this one.

Fun tour of the garden and garden ecology for the littles. Great plan illustrations and plenty of fun. We have a tradition of farmer's marketing and front yard gardening and this fun book goes right in hand.

Wonderful book

Great book for toddler to K or Grade 1. I've used this book with preschoolers, as well as K and Gr 1 classes.

The pictures in this book are wonderful, and so is the story. I recommend this for very young children. It is a great buy.
