Nope this is a plastic vinyl like material so you would not have to worry about it breaking. The hat comes off so money can be deposited and taken out. Other than that the arms move from one point of articulation as does the walkie.

Is it bigger or smaller than an average piggy bank?

I would say smaller because it's not as deep as other piggy banks, but it's still a good size. It measures approximately 5.5"H x 5"W x 3"D. My son is 15yrs old and he loves it. He keeps it on the shelf with his collectibles.

where do you put in the coins (gems)?

You take off the hat and insert all gems directly into the brain.
