Getting Started with Citrix XenApp 6.5

A pathetic waste of paper. Returned for refund
This book is WORTHLESS.First, it's written in very poor English. A technical book is supposed to be clear, precise-- this is simply sloppy. The Technical Editors were asleep at the wheel. The very first sentence in Preface contains "different platforms such Windows, Mac, Linux"... The very first sentence! The proofreading droids must have crashed right there and nobody noticed :)Second, there's very little to no substance! Just dialog box after dialog box-- click this, click that, almost no effort to educate the reader on the product's architecture, design, usage scenarios, configuration choices etc. For the purpose of this review, I opened the book at random: pg. 208, Guidelines for working with policies. Sounds promising, right? Under that heading, one reads "The process for configuring policies is as follows: * Create and give a name to the policy: We need to create and provide a name for the new policy. * Configure policy settings: We need to choose if we are going to create a User Configuration or Computer Configuration policy and then set the policies." Two more bullets and that's it!!! Eight lines total, then it's on to another topic...Third, the frequent mentioning of previous versions is very annoying. Why would I care where something was stored in previous versions, or what a console used to be called?Last but possibly most infuriating of all, some of the text is just Marketing. Chapter 14, Virtualizing XenApp Farms sounds interesting. Here are some excerpts: "Deploying XenApp 6.5 on Citrix XenServer/ XenServer is an open and powerful server virtualization solution that cuts datacenter costs [...] Deploying XenApp 6.5 on Microsoft Hyper-V/ Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V R2 (Hyper-V), the next generation hypervisor-based server virtualization technology [...] enables you to implement server virtualization with ease. [...] Deploying XenApp 6.5 on VMware vSphere/ VMware vSphere leverages the power of virtualization to transform datacenters into dramatically simplified cloud computing infrastructure [blah-blah-blah] next generation [etc. etc.]"Because of all this, I was not able to finish the book. I may have missed the best parts...

Informative, not well constructed
You would think that with such little choice in XenApp/XenDesktop books available that the few published would read like a Dr. Seuss short story. This exceeded my expectations, however it does contain quite a few grammatical errors making the read pretty difficult. It does not read front to back, rather it covers a large deal of information repeated and built upon chapter after chapter. Would recommend this over other choices only if you plan on taking a fast track course on the subject, would not suggest this as a hand-helper guide to newbies or experienced professionals in the field alike.

learned a lot, could be better
I read this book, used Urban Penguin's videos, used material from Citrix Xperience site, and I worked with XenApp 6.5 in order to pass the A-20 CCA test. After taking the test I felt like I was still missing some knowledge. The book was ok, but could use improvement. I didn't find there was any alternatives though at the time I bought it, so I was glad it existed.

Great hands on guide for Citrix
Excellent hands on walk through of the new generation of XenApp, 64 bit and all the benefits of current Microsoft technology. The scenario based approach is one that you can adapt to your own environment or use as template for a POC to test out the new feature set. Given all the new features in both Citrix and Microsoft this is a must have guide for any Citrix admin. It is hard to find good Citrix documentation even on the Citrix site lots of searching on the Internet especially for detailed step by step guides. In this book you find it so save yourself some time and pick up a copy and start working.

Not For Reference
I bought this book and its two related ones hoping to have reference books that would let me look something up as issues came along. This book appears to be good to read as you build your first Xenapp farm but it has no value for looking up to see how to add or fix anything. I's just not a reference book.
