The frustrated calligrapher from Barakamon is in for a high school throwback! This playful prequel reveals Handa’s incredibly introverted teenage years that made him who he is today. Everybody loves Sei Handa, the handsome calligrapher genius who can do no wrong. Girls adore him, guys respect him, and anyone who is anyone has at least heard his name. The only person who doesn’t know of his popularity is…Handa himself! Wallowing in his insecurities, he assumes people talk about him because they hate his guts. A childhood friend, Kawafuji, could tell him the truth, but it’s way more fun to just sit back and laugh as Handa makes the worst out of every situation.

Fully enjoyable.
So first off, this is a prequel. You don't have to have watched the original anime first to watch this one. I watched this one first and actually enjoyed it more. It was hilarious and had so many moments that were not at all what I was expecting and made me laugh till I was crying. You can watch this first, second, or just this one and not the other. They feel like stand alone anime and only had a few call outs to the other series that didn't feel like I was missing anything.

A prequel
The weird thing about this series is that it aired as a prequel series to the main series Barakamon. I just didn't feel like the jokes landed as well as they wanted them to land. Although following Honda-kun through the people around him is an interesting concept, as the story informs us that he thinks everyone hates him, when instead he's Mr. Popular because of how he is cold and distant. For what it's worth the animation is really smooth and scenes do have their money shots. The show will leave you smiling and get the occasional laugh, and if you haven't seen Barakamon, you don't have to worry as this can be viewed as a standalone. If you have seen Barakamon, just know the tone and jokes are different from that series.

Humorous slice of life
One of my favorite anime. It doesn't take itself to seriously and has a good sense of community life and what it means to have support from family and friends. If you are an artist you will understand.

Hilarious and Underrated!
This show is fantastic. I'm a fan of slice of life anime, but sometimes they're more serious or light. Handa-kun is more gender neutral. It's hilarious and light hearted. Both my husband and I enjoyed it.
