Dao De Jing in Clear English: Including a Step by Step Translation

Perfect for those with a few years of Chinese language under their belt who want to dive into Classical Chinese.The bane of every Chinese language learner's existence is unknown characters. When we don't recognize a word, we have to pull out a touch screen dictionary and manually look up the pronunciation and meaning.This book takes away that trouble. I can finally read a book through without bouncing between a phone dictionary. The pinyin and word by word meaning is right there!This book is very new (2018) which means it's able to build and improve on old translations. It's also special in that it's a collaboration between a native English speaker and a native Chinese speaker, which gives the translation accuracy much more integrity.The downsides:1) I wish it there was a traditional Chinese version.2) The cover isn't very handsome. I think a lot of folks buy The Dao De Jing so that they can ostentatiously display it on their bookshelves. This book, however, has a very humbling cover that resembles a high school textbook. Personally, I think this adds to the charm. "Without laughter, there's no Dao" as the book says.I look forward to reading the other books Pepper and Dr Wang have collaborated on.

Best DDJ version I've ever read. I wish I knew an interlinear version existed sooner because I've had to use online text and use a translater, and it's just a lot.Now, I still read other versions but I always compare it with this version because it's the original. And that's the beautiful thing about using the original text with translations is that you can translate it into your own version! The DDJ becomes the YOU Version. :) How beautiful.

This is a really great book for those who look to translate the Dao word by word.

This is an excellent translation. Each saying from the Dao De Jing has four pages dedicated to it: the first page is the modern English translation, then the second page is the original Chinese. Then there is a transliteration and an explanation on the next two pages. This is absolutely one of the best treatments of a book originally written in another language that I have ever found. I'm buying another copy as a gift. Anyone learning Chinese, interested in Oriental religion, or wisdom literature in general, will love this book.

I like to read lao Tzu - do te ching words of wisdom, philosophy of the way of life to keep going for the better understanding of worldly systems well written and thanks for the hard work to publish the book I will always keep this book even read again and again. If you have another same as same as this version with Chinese writing/pinyin/English let me know I like to learn and read and write Chinese .

I love the dual-script, side-by-side translation. It's by far the best way to read the ancient Chinese texts. Thanks very much to the writers who put this one together

It was indeed a word by word translation! So, most of the lines don’t even make sense. Read Dao De Jing translated in contexts… English and Chinese languages are not compatible for word by word translation. You could make a pancake out of clay and try to eat but you can’t translate Chinese classical into English word by word and try to understand it…. 3 stars for
