Disappointed - Not What I Expected from A Modern Device
I play regularly on the Tetris website, which pointed me to this product. It has been out of stock for the longest time and now that it finally restocked, I bought two - one for me and one for my Dad. We both love tetris. I know this device is probably marketted at kids, but I'm also certain a huge portion of people planning to buy this are as old as me if not older, and would expect to have this in a bag or jacket for commuting or similar. My initial reaction was fantastic. The build quality feels good and the device comes with a charging cable in sturdy plastic packaging. However, when you begin playing you quickly find the severe limitations of the device. It doesn't save high scores between power downs, it only plays a few bars of the tetris music before stopping, and the first game when you turn it on again has the same block progression. I don't know about the others, but the device overall seems to have extremely limited memory.I would expect these to be basic functions included with a modern portable game. Saving high scores is a fundamental joy of Tetris, the music is classic and one would expect to be able to play with it for as long as the game lasts, and the random nature of the blocks is what gives the game replayability. The button design is also quite clunky, meaning quick presses when the game ramps up are next to impossible. And mapping the hard drop button onto the up key of the d-pad seems like a poor choice when there are TWO buttons for rotate. All in all, I am extremely disappointed with this hand-held Tetris and would strongly recommend against any long-time fans of the game buying this with the expectation of having the game in their pocket on a long journey. For kids or anyone new to the game, go ahead. But my advice would be to invest in an old Gameboy and Tetris cartridge. Much more flexibility and replayability.
