Q: Do i have to drill holes in the wall before I put this up?

Yes, If possible, at least one side should be fastened to a stud for maximum stability. Since studs are placed 16" on center, only one side of a 42" grab bar would match up with a stud. If a stud is not available and you are drilling through drywall plastic anchors will need to be placed in the drilled hole before fastening bar to wall. For even greater safety small toggle bolts would be best; however that may not be possible if you do not have access to the back side of the wall. Which ever way you choose to fasten the grab bar, it needs to be very secure to prevent an accident.

Q: Can I assemble only part of it? I only want a 4 tier shelf but I like the color this comes in.

Yes you can. Each piece comes independent, so can create as many times as you would like with the amount of pieces available.

Q: Would this be sturdy enough to use for books only?

This is NOT a bookshelf. I bought it for a small corner I had thinking that I could put my books on it, but it is WAY to small.
