How Life Imitates Chess

This book is in the chess psychology category. There are no games. The 1993 world championship match against Nigel Short was prepared by Kasparov and his seconds from a survey of all Shorts games; their conclusion was Short is an attack/counter attack player. Kasparov switched style to quiet positional chess with the white pieces! The book draws many parallels between business , politics, history, war, etc. with chess. There are many interesting comments about his five consecutive battles with Karpov. Kasparov is a big fan of Churchill. He discusses computer chess and how he lost a match of Hopper to a German three year old! He believes if fair elections were held in Russia President Putin would lose. Quotes the Litvenenko case . And I got the impression at the end of a sense of melancholy on Kasparov's side. I throughly enjoyed the read and am glad to include this in my chess library. I was never a follower of Kasparov for a number of distinct reasons ; but after this I see him in a different light.

Kasparov gives a lot gems in this book and it's amazing how he can use chess so well to make these comparisons. I would suggest it to anyone that wants to read a book on strategy.

All the parts about chess are very interesting. If you’re an average player, you’ll definitely pick up tips on how to improve your game. However, the self-help advice is nothing that hasn’t been said by others countless times before. It’s a well written book, but it would’ve been much better if it had just been about chess.

Awesome book, very well structured and very well explained. Feels good to see how a chess player thinks. One chess related event/fact then a life situation and comparison. Easy to read and also many take aways!

This was a great book perfect for strategic thinking and also the winners mindset, please read this.

It would certainly be easier to read if one’s a chess player but I feel it would benefit almost every reader.Enjoyed it, bar the platitudes that it often veers into.

Gift for husband who plays chess. It is not a book about the moves but as the title suggests. Husband thought it was excellent and he us generally very critical of writing styles.

I enjoyed reading this book, but found myself enjoying some aspects more than others. For instance, whilst I realise it was meant to be written as a kind of 'self-help for the way to live your life' type of book using chess analogies, I became much more interested in the anecdotes of Kasparov's life and chess games. So, whilst I would recommend the book, I will now be looking for an autobiography of Kasparov.

I enjoyed this book, because it presents a way to apply a methodology learned in the chess board to our day to day challenges.
