Focus speed is super fast. In the field
This is a very enjoyable piece of glass. Its got enough range for doing serious wildlife. If you want even more range, attach the optional 1.4x converter (MkIII) for even more reach. Yet, when equipped with an extension tube, its equally capable in doing nature close-ups of bees, dragonflies, or butterflies. Focus speed is super fast. In the field, It handles well and is well balanced and easy to hold. The images are noticeably sharper than the Mk I version. Build quality is terrific as is expected of an "L" series lens. It does weigh about 3.5 pounds, but like I said, its well balanced so that doesn't seem to be as big of an issue as it otherwise would be.Bottom line, you get a lot of versatility with this lens. I got mine refurbished for around $1800.00 and I feel it was money well spent.

Very clean lens, focused is tight and overall looks new!
So far I'm very happy with this lens, I've only had a Chace to take a few pictures, but the focus is very fast and accurate. I will post pictures as soon as I can.

Versatile tank of a lens, but the RF 100-500 may be worth the extra instead
I have a rather unique use case - shooting photojournalism for work and wildlife for fun. This lens serves as a compromise between the two of those uses. It's a sort of jack of all trades, master of none. For the same price you could get a lens that is better at one of those two disciplines, but would not work well at all for the other. This lens is not ideal for photojournalism because capturing fast action in low light without resorting to high ISOs is a struggle, and it's not ideal for wildlife photography because it could be longer and faster (though you'd have to sacrifice the ability to zoom). It's almost too heavy to carry, run with, clamber with, etc. for photojournalism, and to be truly useful as a wildlife lens, it needs at least a 1.4x extender. But it performs adequately for either use.One unique advantage of this lens for nature photography, though, is its close focus. At its closest focus distance and maximum zoom, it delivers a magnification ratio of about 1:3, almost as good as a dedicated macro. It's great for filling the frame with small, difficult-to-approach critters. But if you have an RF body and the same use cases, I strongly recommend saving for the RF 100-500 instead, especially if you plan on regularly using this lens with a 1.4x extender, for two reasons:First, the RF lens is smaller and lighter than the EF lens + RF adapter even before you include the extender. On paper the difference is small, but holding them side by side it's obvious that the 100-500 handles much more comfortably - almost as comfortable as the EF 70-300.Second, while the 100-500's f/7.1 long-end maximum aperture looks really bad on paper, in reality it isn't much slower. It hits f/5.6 only 50mm sooner than the EF 100-400 and is only a third of a stop slower at 400mm. It's almost like having the lens automatically engage a 1.4x extender as you get toward the end of its range (the 100-400 on a 1.4x is a 540mm f/8, while the bare 100-500 is a 500mm f/7.1).So the 100-500 is much better for my use. Greatly improved ergonomics aside, the 100-500 is about as fast on the short end, which is generally all I use for photojournalism, but gets significantly longer without meaningful loss of aperture or the need for an extender for wildlife.

Perfect 👍
Received everything mentioned, attachments and carry bag. Took one good picture in one setting, but still have yet to test the other settings. I am satisfied with what I received, it was a great feeling of excitement and relief when I received it, because everything was there and worked on the first try. Thank you 👍

Excellent lens for wildlife photography
I purchased this as new-used and I'm extremely happy with my purchase. I used to hike with a Tamron 150-600mm on my Canon 90d, with a 300mm prime lens in my pack. This replaces both of those lenses! Although it "only" goes to 400mm, the picture clarity is so good at 400mm that it outperforms the Tamron at 650mm.

Horrible Quality!
The description said "renewed" with a 1 year Canon warranty and all original items and at arms length no visible marks. I received a third party bag, third party lens hood, several scratches on the body, several scratches on the element, visible dust inside the lens behind the front glass. Even the color of the lens body looked a little "off". I've owned one of these before. I can't belive the description was way off on this. I would almost question if it even had a warranty as this item looks very used. Will never buy a renewed item ever again!

Like new
The lens I received looks new. So far it works as expected. Though, AF doesn’t work with my Canon 2xExtender viii. I’d read In reviews that was the case, so no surprise; but I hoped it would work. C’est La Vie. Canon advertises that the lens and extender are compatible. Technically true I suppose, just no AF. However, the manual focus is easier to operate with this lens than my Sigma 150-600, so I think it will work well. I’ll need to use it more to be able to get a good feel for how well the photography is with the lens. Update: AF works in live view.
