Q: How are these on the breakage front? everytime i buy derwent the cores are severly damaged.

Coming from a professional pencil salesperson, if you are experiencing a lot of color pencils that are breaking when you are sharpening them, and you are using a single blade type sharpener, most likely your blade is dull and is putting too much friction on the color cores, and snapping them off just inside the wood casing. I would try changing the blade out on your sharpener or purchasing a new sharpener to not waste color pencils. An Alvin brand 9866 or 9868 brass sharpener style is a "lifetime buy" since the sharpener is indestructible, and the blades are cheaply replaceable.

Q: How hard is the lead compared to other Derwent pencils? Closer to coloursoft or artists in terms of color laydown?

They don't wear down as quickly as Coloursoft but are not as scratchy as Studio and Artist. The color lays down smoothly but it to the transparent side like other "oil" pencils (especially Irojiten), I was able to get some light over dark blends and more layers than with thicker waxier pencils. The 12 pack is reasonable enough to try and there's no reason you shouldn't like them. I do portraits not coloring books and it's been so far so good on artist quality papers. They behaved well on smooth toned sketchbook paper.

Q: Do you use water with these like picture?

Nikki, Derwent Lightfast are oil-based colored pencils. They are NOT used with water. If you are looking for watercolor media, you might want to try Derwent Inktense Pencils or Intense Blocks. If you're concerned with colors fading over time, most of the Derwent products have a good lightfast rating. Hope this helps.

Q: Is there a colour chart for these pencils?

Yes. Go to the Derwent website. There is a UK site and an American site, I ordered the newest individual colors from the UK because the individual pencils were nit available in the IS at the time.
