Q: Will this work if you refill with other brands plastic wrap whose hole is just under an inch in diameter?

I would say probably not. I tried it on a roll of wax paper with less than 1" diameter. The 3 points are flexible and they did start to close yogurt but I fear if I forced it all the way in, they would break.
