The base is black plastic inset with LED lights that look effective with the glass butterfly placed on it. This takes 3 AAA batteries that fit into the compartment on the bottom of the base. There is a small button that turns the lights on and pressing the same button changes the colour modes .The clear glass butterfly is well made with smooth edges and a glossy finish.
