a startling fable brought to life outside Houston
Powder is a touching film about a 17-year-old albino boy who had been brought up by his grandparents and now finds himself thrown out into the world where he is subject to bullying and exclusion. However he has other differences, including a phenomenal I.Q. and a powerful electric charge around him that draws any current in the vicinity, enables him to tap into people's thoughts or feelings or be a vector between two other people, thanks to this extraordinary energy. It makes for some good scenes in the film, particularly those with lightning streaks, and these powers combined with the mistreatment at school make it a variant on Carrie. Like her he has a physical appearance which makes him an outsider, but is actually beautiful, and has remarkable sensitivity. The director Victor Salva is not interested here in going in a horror direction, but he does near the end throw in an element of homophobic abuse of Powder, who prior to this had seemed straight, which probably has an autobiographical basis. The film is let down by a script that isn't quite as good as his more genre material, coming across as a bit clunky, and at times it becomes very sentimental, especially with the almost continuous use of music. You feel Salva could easily have made a stranger film and that it would have been better for it. The lead Sean Patrick Flanery and Jeff Goldblum are very good, however, and there are some surprising touches of tenderness as well as the set pieces.

unique powder
Powder is one of the strange films that exists outside the usual motivations and work of the actors and director involved. At some point; Powder developed a momentum of its own and became a truly unique work of cinematography.College jocks and republicans probably won't like this film. Outsiders and those who never quite fitted in where they grew up will love this film More than that - they will remember this film probably for the rest of their lives.I'm 42 and have seen many films in my life. It's hard to come across a movie that has heart and authenticity. It seems to be getting harder. A movie that pushes beyond what is expected of it and delivers more. This is no crowd pleaser and it isn't meant to be.Powder is written from the heart and it shows. Each step of this film brings you closer to the pathos and tragedy and humour of life. Someone once said: "innocence will teach what it feels like to be used." Powder is about that innocence. The power and force that comes from that open heart and finds itself up against a world of brutality and vengeance towards those who are different. The performances are wonderful and never rushed. I suspect that Powder could not be made in 2011 as the momentum of the film is uncovered with grace and whatever lengths of time are needed to unfold each piece of the story. You will not want to leave your chair as they do but this is no pretentious art film. This is cinema engaging and riveting because it is a part of who we are and not an artifice of how the world is.Powder will broaden your sense of who you are. It will remind you what makes humanity have grace and what erodes the best of what we are. Powder is a mirror to the world he finds himself in and he never once steps back from the plate of being himself. But it's more than that. The stories of other people that become connected with Powder are just as authentic and at ground level.A film like powder is rare. I believe this film was an important moment in cinema and it was largely overlooked. If you belong; if you compete and have contempt for those who aren't like you then you will hate this film. If you have been there and felt the coldness of a world that wants to push you outside because you are sick; maimed; broken; confused; heartbroken or just want more and hope for more in your life than dollars and property or shareholder stocks. You will find grace and beauty in Powder. And dare I say it in 2011: a reminder of someone not so dissimilar to powder. A reminder that Love is the answer in our broken world.

A popular cult film
Similar in storyline to Phenomenon (one of my favourite films) but with a rather less satisfactory ending. Worth a watch if you haven't seen it.
