Does anyone know the purpose of that notch on the top jaw of the pliers?

I can’t say for certain, but I think the notch in these slip groove pliers is just another way to set Kobalt pliers apart from other brands you can purchase. It seems to me that you can actually feel the difference in the quality of these tools. I use mine on a regular basis and am still well pleased.

any type of warranty?

I'm not sure about a written warranty, but I can assure you, I don't think you'll need it. These pliers are quality made and at one time or another I've used them all. I was well pleased when I got my set. Affordable prices too. If this company supports NASCAR driver, Jimmy Johnson, I think we're in good shape. If there is a problem, Amazon usually stands behind any purchase you make.
