How does the sound quality compare to jbl extreme?

At lower volume the JBL Xtreme sounds cleaner, the D9 gets so much louder and the bass is more as the volume goes up, if you use an equalizer (like on Spotify) it will out perform the Xtreme with ease at all volumes

Will this survive a drop better than the d8?

Not sure about the d8. But the base tone was so strong mine vibrated off a end table that was 3 feet above the tile floor without any damage.

Think of buying 2 of these. How far apart could I pair the 2 speakers? I would like to have them on either end of my pool

You should be fine I work in a warehouse and have 2 connected on either side of the warehouse and they do just fine. They also stay connected to my phone when I go to the office wich is a good ways away.
