I have a bathroom with in-line fan above the ceiling ducting to to the roof.. I am installing an en-suite next door. Can I link into the existing fan

This is an old question but is just as relevant today.  I asked the manufacturer of my extractor fan the same question, and they said that air will always take the easiest route, which in most cases will be to push moist air from the first bathroom into the second bathroom.  Also the ducting must be insulated to stop warm moist air from condensing in the loft void and causing water to run back down into the fan.  The maximum length of ducting should also be checked with the manufacturer, for an Envirovent Silent Design 100 it is preferably 1m to 1.5m (otherwise the air resistance is too high for the fan to be sufficiently effective). Fitting the device in this listing may stop the air from going down into the second bathroom, but I would still be concerned about the air condensing.  Better to have separate ducting if possible I would think.

Question 2

How effective is this at stopping draughts once in the closed position?

I didn't notice any draughts after installing. Its certainly a big improvement on the standard in line fan kits which only have a permanently open louvre therefore a constant back draught and leak your heated air, which is money out the window! It would be better if it had some seal strips to give a good seal when the flaps are closed. I added a thin strip of self adhesive foam to do this, but make sure it doesn't stop the flaps closing. Spring pressure is very light so be absolutely sure you install it level and horizontal as the instructions, to ensure flaps close properly. I think these give a much better seal than a wall fan with built-in or wall mounted flap Louvre which flap in the lightest of winds. I used the fan kit supplied Louvre as well with a sheet of insect mesh to give additional protection against wind.

Question 3

Will this fit directly onto the outlet of the fan (the plastic cylinder) or does it have connect to flexi ducting?

Hi Depends on the make, the in-line fan unit used was a Vent Axia type, managed to fit to the outlet side of the unit by making a adapter, chopping down a piece of round white pipe & round white channel connector purchased from Screwfix for about £3 to £4 total, found in the ducting/ventilation bit. Just mastic together and it added about 6 inches. If you do not have the room, the other method used was to grind away slightly a chamfer on  the fan itself and glueing directly and by using a small Dremel  with a grinding attachment. Both worked however the first method was easier to achieve and hope this helps. The initial problem it is made by Manroe & not Vent AXIA and compatible issues. But  would recommend fitting to the fan itself as it would provide a stable and level environment for the shutter to operate correctly. Hope this helps, regards Peter

My extractor fan is in the bathroom ceiling. will the draught shutter work ok if fitted to ducting directly above the fan looking upwards to the roof.

Hi. Its recommended to be mounted so the flaps work on the horizontal. Mounting it vertically would require the fan to be strong enough to lift the flaps upwards. The spring is very poor, and not relevant for the direction you want to fit this anyway as its removable, the flaps are lightweight and flimsy, so it might work. Depends on how strong your fan is and would have to be mounted right behind the fan unit. This also will not stop the draught, just slow it right down, as there are holes in the flaps. If the ducting is fairly short you could mount this correctly by putting it just before the exit, behind the grill, assuming it vents out the side of a wall. Personally I think its a rubbish product. It could be so better engineered. Thing is, whats the alternative? Im not aware of another product for doing this job.
