Heartburn—or acid indigestion—is a burning sensation or discomfort that is generally felt in the chest. This feeling can last from a few minutes to a few hours or more for some people.

Why do people get heartburn or acid indigestion?

Heartburn is caused when acids from your stomach are forced back up through the esophagus, where the delicate tissues may be compromised from the acid. This backup is called “acid reflux” and creates the familiar, fiery sensation we call heartburn.

Occasional heartburn is common, but it can be a sign of other medical issues if you have acid reflux regularly or for a long time. If you have heartburn frequently, talk to your family doctor.

Can heartburn symptoms be prevented?

In many cases, changing just some of your lifestyle habits may make a difference. Try avoiding foods and drinks that you know trigger heartburn and try to stop eating before you feel full. After eating, avoid lying down for at least three hours.

What foods trigger heartburn?

Some of the worst known offenders are: alcohol (especially red wine), coffee and caffeinated beverages, chocolate, spicy foods, peppermint or spearmint, citrus drinks like orange juice, tomato products and other high-acid foods, and high-fat meals.
