Against Academicians and the Teacher

The introduction does a great job outlining the arguments of the two texts and putting them in their context.

This book was well done and exactly what I expected, being somewhat familiar with other of his works. As Augustine's other similarly titled works, it was a well thought out attack "AGAINST" philosophers and rationalists. The Teacher was very well written and I think properly translated.

It is a great dialog between St. Augustine and his sixteen years old son Adeodatus about the concept of teaching. They answer a question, who is the real teacher in our life. A very theological and intellectual dialog and lecture at the same time, a new quality, a unique quality one may state.

Augustine is a genius.

This is probably Augustine's earliest work, but it's also one of his most difficult. In Contra Academicos, Augustine sets himself the task of defending the Stoic criterion of truth, i.e. the "kataleptic" or "apprehensible" impression against Academic Skeptic criticisms. This work presents some of Augustine's most fascinating epistemological insights, especially into the nature of subjective and necessary truths. If you are interested in Academic Skepticism or ancient epistemology, then this is something you should really read. However, I also recommend reading Cicero's Academica before this, since Augustine takes up many of the arguments presented there.
