Stone Carving Kit - Starter Set kit

For the price, this is pretty nice. I luckily already know about stone carving and got this kit for the stone and such. Its hard to find decent small stone pieces that you dont have to buy in bulk for over 60$. This came with three stones (one alabaster and two soapstones of diff colors) and theyre decently sized. One was missing a chunk of stone but i wont complain much about that since its cheap.Though, the reason I titled this the way i did is because the instructions arent anywhere near what one would think when you see a kit of anything. A small two page pamphlet that is VERY basic on instructions with making a stone into a card holder (just filing a freakin notch into it. lol) and a very simple owl like in the picture of this.All in all, very nice product for the price. After I try out the tools, if they arent any good, ill say so but in general, the price for even those three nice chunks of stone is pretty good.

Came with one soap stone about the size of two palms, decent quality tools, and overall not a bad kitI will say it wasn't what I expected when I got it, this is like small time carving and I guess I didn't get that from the description(if you're looking for a chisel there is non in this)

Came packaged well and you get quite a lot for your money

To begin, this set was accurate to the description at the time I ordered it. It contained one (29oz) block of soapstone, one carving knife, one rasp, one dust mask, one bottle of polishing oil, and three pieces of sandpaper. And "instructions".I was disappointed in the low quality of the tools, in particular the knife. It was dull (easy enough to sharpen), but beyond that it was very uncomfortable to use. The rasp was very sharp, with a very aggressive cut. Too aggressive in my opinion, it cuts faster than the knife does. Having a second, finer rasp, would have been really useful.As a craftsman, with over two decades in woodworking, including wood carving, I value quality tools. Even in a basic set, quality is important. My experience has been that with "beginner" kits, such as this one, having quality tools is important. Good tools will lead to a better experience, often times a more successful one as well. This results in the beginner being more inclined to pursue a new hobby, and buy more tools, equipment, and material. Thus leading to more sales for the supplier. At this price point, better tools could have been supplied.

This kit included one larger soapstone. My son is using this kit for a stone sculpting class and it has the appropriate tools included. It is dusty while "rasping" so you will want to use the included dust mask. The stone is a nice blackish/grayish color, a good solid piece of stone which should last forever once completed and is soft enough still for my 12-yr-old boy to carve. We are being told it will polish nicely at the end of the project: a penguin. You can find creative projects to choose online with a search for soapstone/sculpture/ (and whatever creature or figure you're curious about). Happy carving!

It was a gift. The receiver has done a couple of great carvings.

I was expecting chisels for some reason.The carving instructions were just a sheet of paper. Very few instructions.They sent a knife that looks like its for carving soap or clay.Not impressed!

I was very excited to get this kit considering I’m a beginner and never done this before. The items in the kit are great, but my problem came with the instructions. They are extremely vague. They don’t tell you what tools are what. They also don’t tell you what items are the wet or dry polishing cloths. They also don’t explain how to use the polish. These are the things I needed to know most and didn’t get answers to.
