Strangely encouraging
Just one letter from husband to wife in this book rescales my own problems immensely.

The farmer vs. the "Vicar of Christ"
I urge anyone who can read to read and compare THIS book about and by a poor farmer (with nothing but an 8 year education in a one room schoolhouse), with the book about Pope Pius XII by the Roman Catholic scholar, John Cornwell. Cornwell didn't call Pius XII "Hitler's Pope" because he was Hitler's WILLING partner, but because he had neither the wisdom nor the courage to OPPOSE Hitler as he should have, thereby allowing the 98% of Germans who identified themselves as "Christians" to be mislead by Hitler into becoming his willing accomplices. This book shows conclusively that all that may be needed to be smarter and holier than any "man of God" - including "the Supreme Pontiff" or "Vicar of Christ" and his whole army of "princes of the Church" put together - is to put your God-given brain and conscience TO GOOD USE !

"No earthly authority has a right to enslave a person's conscience . . .
. . . God's rights surpass the rights of human beings." (#76, p. 220).Frank Jagerstatter (FJ) was an extraordinary man of faith. He chose to go to this death (by beheading), rather than give allegiance to Adolph Hitler and the Nazi regime. He left behind a wife and four children (three from marriage to his wife), numerous family members and friends, rather than be complicit with the godless and depraved regime of Adolph Hitler.A brief 26 page introduction by Jim Forest and an Overview of FJ's life introduces the book. Part One (about 130 pages) is correspondence between Franz and his wife Franziska, largely while Franz was in military training and later incarceration. Part Two includes longer writings and essays (about 100 more pages). The book includes many family and other photographs as well as biographical information, and a chronology of his life and of the Third Reich.I was left amazed at this man of faith, knowing I would likely not have been able to follow his example of fidelity to his conscience. He was declared "Blessed" October 26, 2007 in the Linz Cathedral, with many of his family present, including his widow Franziska and children. For a man with the equivalent of an eighth grade education, FJ had extraordinary insight into the human spirit and into Catholic teaching and history, and expressed his insights well. (In my opinion, FJ reflects the insight and knowledge of a person with advanced study in theology, psychology and history.) He has extraordinary insight into the human spirit and Catholic teaching and how it applies to our lives.

a book about a supremely ethical person
Franz Jagerstatter's writings about his ethical and religious life are something every 20th century person should read. He was truly an authentic man who took responsibility for his actions. From a rural, little formal education, somewhat of a hell-raising background he charted a true and unwavering course through a great social and political upheaval and recorded his thoughts for us. This book is on a par with Merton's Seven Storey Mountain and Augustine's Confessions.
