Disciplining Women: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Black Counterpublics, and the Cultural Politics of Black Sororities

Well written book
I am almost done with this book. It gives deep insight into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorortity, Inc. It also gives several brief in-depth comparative analyses of other Black Greek lettered sororities. It is not written by a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, but she had the cooperation of many members of the sorority. Although it is not written by a soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha, it is NOT one of those cheaply written fake-expose books that claim to tell you the secrets of the organization. This is an extremely scholarly work, and will give one a better understanding of the purpose of the organization, the reason its members are so dedicated to it, and its significance in strengthening and bonding educated women of color around affecting social change.C. I encourage Sorors to read this.
This book does give a great deal of insight how Alpha Kappa Alpha, should’ve moved in the political sphere. I’ve only read up to the 3rd chapter but I’m highlighting bc she does bring up some very interesting points. I’d relay or gift this book to a Soror

ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA HOW IT'S HSTORY HAS BEEN EFFECTIVE
I am not a member of AKA. I have been affected however by all the good works it has performed for more than a century ago. My daughter however, was so infatuated by the thought of joining this sorority and has been since she was a fourth grade student. When searching for colleges throughout the United States, this was amongst her "must haves" when making a decision. She applied to 12 schools and was accepted at 11 of them. The choice of a certain IVY League school was what her Dad and I would have chosen but she did not agree and chose an excellent University instead, that had an "active" AKA chapter. This is not a short read or a Cinderella story. It examines the pros and cons of joining this historical group of women and will give you what you might need in making a choice. I highly recommend this book for future AKA's or those of us who just want to know more. It took perseverance and hard work but as a junior at a major University my daughter finally became an AKA!

Very informative and thoroughly written!
Great book for anyone seeking additional historical information into BGLOs. I enjoyed the accounts from the different women who were able to capture the essence of the sorority through their stories and experiences during their process. I commend the author for allowing the reader to see the sorority from a different more in depth perspective by tracing the history of African American culture and the origins of fraternal traditions. Bringing this information to the forefront allows the public to witness the opportunities BGLOs have and continue to provide on a global scale.
