I would give this book a B plus
I have watched many of her free online videos - finally broke down and bought one of her books. I have been working at watercolor for 5 years. The first half or so of the book is just sort of review of things you already know if you have been working with watercolor for a year or so. There are two or three good demos in the book and many lovely photos of her work with no explanation of how she did them. As I got to the end of the book, I was surprised to find that she adds acrylic to cover shadows and negative space in paintings which I thought were all watercolor only - there is nothing "wrong" with this - but I was just sort of disappointed to see that. I wonder how many other watercolor paintings using negative space actually just put acrylic in the tiny little spaces between tree limbs. That's what I really wanted - how to work in those really difficult negative spaces - more tips on how to make that work - it is quite difficult. Mainly, I guess you have to practice a lot - and probably pay for lessons or workshops. That said, I do love many of her paintings and she does give some great advice. You can also get a lot of it for free on artistsnetwork tv and you tube. I'm still glad I purchased the book - it gave me two or three new ideas and some lovely paintings to inspire me.

NOTHING NEW HERE BUT SOME MAY ENJOY THE APPROACH FOR THE FIRST TIME
Nothing new under the sun here with regards to negative painting and scumbling, lifting, splattering, washing, and so on with watercolors. But for some people, who *draw-paint* and are not used s a more fluid and abstract way of working with the wateru characteristics in watercolor, this might be an eye opener.

Some good inspirational ideas
I am relatively new to watercolor and open to trying new things. I was inspired to get this book because it was recommended by an artist I admire on you tube. I have enjoyed it.

Try it.....
....if you think reading a book will help you paint more loosely.

Beauty is in the negative spaces
This book provides many examples of finding beauty in the spaces between objects and then tells you how to paint them. Beautiful examples, excellent step by step explanations.

Lesson Learned
First, I'm reviewing the content of the book - I've been wanting to buy this book for years since I saw some work by others that credited their technique to Kemp's negative painting technique. I was super excited to get this and check it out...After reading through the whole book I was in awe of her art but the explanation portion left much to be desired. Some artists are great teachers, some artists aren't. I love what she does with negative painting, but the lessons are so-so.Also, a warning: Don't buy books heavy on images for the Kindle. I went out and bought the hard copy after getting frustrated with my Kindle version (the hard copy is a must in this case!). Hard copies of art books are usually just a few bucks more, go with the real thing!

Jog the right side of your brain...
While I have seen much literature on using negative space and no doubt all of us use the technique in drawing at one point or another this is the first book I have seen applied to watercolor painting. I shall probably never attain the author's level of skill and freshness but her suggested excercises are certainly fun and stimulating. The book is nicely printed and laid out, and as with everything else, you take what you can/want and incorporate it in your own work. If you are interested in the subject do try to get the DVD,watching it being done adds another dimension to the book.

This book is a delight to read
This book is a delight to read! It's filled with fabulous projects, and clear instructions that will really make the concept of negative painting click. I highly recommend this book! It's a favorite in my watercolor book library. :-)

I now look for the shapes made by the spaces around and between objects - not easy to begin with because for all my adult life
This book introduced me to a brand new way of observing the world around me! I now look for the shapes made by the spaces around and between objects - not easy to begin with because for all my adult life, like most people, it was only the object that registered. I was a very traditional painter but am becoming bolder and looser since trying to create the picture through this negative vision way. I find the book very stimulating - thank you Linda.

Getting me going!
This book appealed to me the moment I saw it. I'm feeling stuck in my art, with highly developed drawing skills, but stunted in the painting techniques dept! Linda Kemp demonstrates in comprehensive steps how she develops her dreamy tree & nature 'scapes, and provides a challenging program of exercises to develop these skills. It's not that I want to copy her paintings, but I do want to build the skills to take my own ideas into another medium. I'm about 1/4 of the way through the book, and waver between feeling cackhanded, and rejoicing when I make a breakthrough and produce something new to me.So many lavishly illustrated books turn out to offer little in the way of practical help, and that's where this one is different.

Not for everyone
Having recently taken up watercolour painting, realised that inadvertently I had been painting negatively , so when I came across this book I knew it was for me, so now I am trying to perfect the technique. I would say that it is not for everyone, unless you find that this concept comes naturally stick to painting in the positive. I think it's a difficult idea to grasp if it isn't obvious to you.
