literatura hispanoamericana-- quick delivery, price and content!
1. The delivery of this book was incredibly quick! I was stuck in quite a bind, needing it for a college class on Tuesday and accidentally had waited until the Friday before to order it. Amazing it shipped on Tuesday morning and got to my campus in perfect shape, exactly 2 hours before my class. It couldn't have been better timing!2. The book is beautiful (has that wonderful smell of new-ness) and a great collection of information, that has sparked a new interest in my for 'literatura de las indigenas.' So far I have only tackled the first chapter, concerning the Mayas, Incas and Aztecas - which had encompassed a diverse interesting collection of poetry, prose and sacred material- and I can't wait to read more.Thank you! Highly recommended!

Excellent literature overview
This is the 1970 version of Tomo or volume 1 which was later updated in 1988 (since the literature is prior to mid-19th century, any version will do). This first volume 1 goes from 15th century to the mid-19th century (vol 2 picks up there to late 20th). This text is for the serious student of Spanish (i.e. literature majors) who are able to read at a university level in Spanish (there is no English in this book). It contains excepts and/or short texts dealing with Columbus, Las Casas and Bernal Diaz del Castillo, among others in the first part (i.e. part 1's theme is of conquest of Americas). It goes without saying older literature is different in Castillian from writing in the 19th centuries and is not as easy to read (Columbus' writings, for example). The themes change as they are reflected in literature. There are seven total parts in volume 1 and they encompass writings by like Ruy Diaz de Guzman, Estaban de Terralla y Landa, Jose Joaquin de Olmedo, Jose Marmol and Justo Sierra. There are many more, of course, but they are in different sections by date, something American texts usually mess up on (i.e. the high school Spanish AP books are a complete and confused wreck out of historical context and most of the writings there are very short). This book is soft cover, has nearly 500 pages and most of it is text (index and golssary and useful but small). Enrique Anderson Imbert (Harvard) and Eugenic Florit did an excellent job in this work. Why buy a book with many short pieces? It is a good way to sample important literature without reading lengthy texts. With this survey you will then know whose work you will want to read more of. If you do not recognise the names above, you don't know what you are missing (for those who can only read English get a good translation. You'll be glad you did). There are many literature worth reading. I put this in English because many parents/students will want a clear explanation of what this book is and is not. Buy this if you really want to know something about Hispanic literature beyond the high school level.
