High quality for an epic experience
The quality is excellent (a blu-ray and a 4K disc, both great) and the movie itself is epic, hands down the best superman movie ever made.

Man of Steel, the reboot of the Superman franchise, attempts to bring a fresh and modern take on the iconic superhero. While the movie boasts impressive visual effects and action sequences, it falls short in several key areas, leaving viewers with a mediocre and underwhelming experience. Here is a viewpoint review of Man of Steel:Plot and Storytelling:The movie attempts to explore the origins and struggles of Superman, focusing on his journey of self-discovery and acceptance of his role as Earth's savior. However, the storytelling feels disjointed and lacks coherence. The nonlinear narrative jumps between different timelines, making it difficult to fully invest in the characters' development and emotional arcs. Additionally, the plot often feels convoluted and overloaded with unnecessary subplots, hindering the overall pacing of the film.Character Development:While Henry Cavill gives a decent performance as Superman, the character lacks depth and emotional resonance. The film fails to fully delve into Superman's internal conflicts and struggles, leaving the audience disconnected from his journey. Supporting characters, including Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and General Zod (Michael Shannon), are also underdeveloped, with limited screen time and shallow characterizations that make it difficult to truly care about their fates.Action and Visual Effects:Man of Steel excels in its visually stunning action sequences and special effects. The intense battles between Superman and his adversaries are filled with explosive action and impressive displays of power. The use of CGI is well-executed, creating breathtaking visuals that enhance the movie's spectacle. However, the excessive focus on action often overshadows the need for a compelling narrative and character-driven storytelling.Tone and Atmosphere:The movie takes a dark and gritty approach to Superman's story, aiming for a more realistic and grounded tone. While this departure from the traditional portrayal of the character is an interesting concept, it fails to strike the right balance. The movie's somber and serious tone becomes overwhelming, lacking the sense of hope and optimism often associated with Superman. The film's grim atmosphere and lack of levity make it a rather joyless and monotonous experience.Direction and Editing:Director Zack Snyder brings his signature visual style to Man of Steel, but it comes at the cost of narrative coherence. The film suffers from excessive use of slow-motion sequences, quick cuts, and shaky camera work, which can be disorienting and detract from the storytelling. The editing choices make it difficult to follow the action at times, resulting in a disjointed viewing experience. Conclusion:Man of Steel falls short of its potential, delivering a mediocre superhero movie that struggles to balance its visual spectacle with coherent storytelling and character development. While the action sequences and visual effects are impressive, the film lacks emotional depth and a cohesive narrative, leaving viewers disconnected from the characters and their journey. Ultimately, it is a forgettable entry in the Superman franchise that fails to leave a lasting impact.

A MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT.
The 1978 version of SUPERMAN was by far the best of all the Superman films. It had a superb cast and there was great chemistry between Superman and Lois Lane. In this new version there is almost none. The over use of special effects left me cold. A more human story was needed. Was it really necessary to go back and forward in time with the story on numerous occasions? Strictly for action fans only.

Superman begins
Superman Returns - 2 Disc [DVD ] did good box seven years ago. But it didn't do great box office. People said it had too much talk and not enough action. So Warner Brothers decided not to make a sequel to that. But instead to have a fresh take on the character and launch a whole new movie franchise for Superman.Man of Steel is said new fresh take. It attempts to do what Batman Begins - 1 Disc Edition [DVD] [2005 ] did, and totally reinvent and restart the character. Thus there is no tie in whatsoever with any Superman movie or tv show that has come before.Even the distinctive John Williams music from the Christopher Reeve movies is absent.Christopher Nolan, Batman director, only executive produces here.Henry Cavill - who actually could have played Superman at one time when Superman returns was in development, only for a new director to come in and change the casting - stars. You know the story. Child called Kal-El from strange and distant planet Krypton. Nobody will listen to his father's warnings of impending doom. So his parents put him in a rocket ship. Krypton goes boom. Kal-El's rocket lands in Kansas. Found by the Kents, etc, etc, etc.We start with Krypton. A take on the planet somewhat different to those seen before. This is an old world with strange creatures and humanoids in black battle armour, with some remarkable technology. Once again, nobody listens to Jor-El. General Zod [Michael Shannon] attempts to take over and gets sent to the phantom zone for his troubles. And the rest you know. This Krypton is quite eye catching, although clearly designed for big screen 3D and thus loses a little on the smaller screen. Right from the off this scene tries to throw action in with the pathos, and pretty much succeeds. It also tosses a big plot maguffin in with it. Russell Crowe's stoic Jor-El is good without stretching his acting abilities. Michael Shannon though immediately grabs the attention, since his Zod is someone not being evil for the sake of it, but a villain with very good intentions who firmly believes he's doing the right thing. You can understand the characters motivations easily and it makes for a strong performance. There's no Ursa this time around, but Antje Traue [ who you might remember from the film Pandorum. Well I quite liked it] does deliver a strong and attention grabbing performance as his sidekick Faora.Krypton eventually blows up. Kal-El gets to Earth. Then things go differently to before. Most of the young Clark in Smallville stuff is seen only in flashback. And instead we're with a grown up Clark trying to find his place in the world. And help people without hurting bullies with his powers. As his father was always at pains to teach him.The Kents are mostly around in flashback. If you want a strong moral Midwestern farmer then why not cast Kevin Costner? He doesn't get a great amount of screentime, but he delivers some good strong moments when he's there.Clark is looking for answers and purpose. Lois Lane [Amy Adams] is looking into a strange find the military have turned up in a polar region. And a threat for all of the planet Earth is about to appear. Can Clark find answers, purpose, and save the day? This being an origin movie/franchise starter, it has to introduce the character, give us their backstory and introduce their world, and give them an adventure with it. It does all of these. The style and the cinematography tries to make it like the Batman films in being modern and real world based. Gone is the costume made by Mrs Kent. Instead we have Kryptonian battle armour with no red pants. The cast are all pretty capable at bringing their characters to life. Although none really do anything beyond what you would expect of them. Laurence Fishburne is a decent Perry White. There's no sign of Jimmy Olsen. But regular readers of Superman comics of the past few years will see one recent addition to the mythos making a screen debut. The bulk of the second half of the film is mostly action. Which is what people asked for from Superman Returns. So should you be careful what you want? Not necessarily. Because although it's long and drawn out it's not badly based, nor is it quite as choppily edited as some blockbusters can be with this kind of thing. I base that opinion on a second viewing though. Some films do work better once you know the story and can take in the details. There's no sign of Lex Luthor. But there are a couple of nods to comic continuity that the eagle eye will catch. The character development of Clark all comes to a head with one moment that may divide opinion. But it's something the film has been reaching for. After that, we're at the point where the set up is done. And the franchise can go anywhere it wants. With an ending that left me wanting to see what it does. The score has to try and be totally original given that they didn't want to use what came before. It's not bad. But doesn't stick in the memory as much as the John Williams version. But then what would? So as a new start for Superman it's not bad at all. It's not quite in the Batman Begins league and thus this is a four star review. But it's a solid blockbuster and worth a watch. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, Castilian Spanish.Subtitles: English, Castilian Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish. The disc begins with a single advert. Which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote.Extras are:Krypton decoded. A six minute long featurette all about the design work for the Krypton scenes. Which is pretty interesting.Superman 75th anniversary short. A one minute long cartoon - with the John Williams theme - that takes Superman through a lot of the different styles he's been drawn in, both on the comic page and other mediums - in the last seventy five years. Including some you never thought you'd see again, and some that you thought best forgotten, this is a treat for fans.Plus the Hobbit. A six minute long feature about the Hobbit films and the locations where they're filmed. Which doubles as a tourist ad for New Zealand. What it's doing here is unclear. But the scenery is great, so it's a good watch. There's also the usual flyer with link to website and code that you can use to download a digital copy of the movie. An interesting new take that justifies the reboot
I decided to watch the film again, in light of all the publicity surrounding the new Batman V Superman film. A lot of negativity had surrounded Man of Steel and there had been some talk of Superman's role in the new film being played down because of it. I managed to find it suspiciously cheap for second hand and watched it - and thoroughly enjoyed it. There are flaws there, but they are not insurmountable or even that significant unless you are going into watching it with a pedantic mindset. So the weaknesses: The main areas that reviewers have targeted have related to: a) The extended battle at the end, b) the conflicted representation of Superman himself, c) slips in logic that are exposed when you pick it apart.a) The battle is too long and insanely destructive. This seems to be addressed in the beginning of the new film, but needs some thought or reference to it within this one. The huge amount of destruction in itself isn't problematic, it just needed to touch on the doubt surrounding his influence / effect in the last few minutes - but instead it goes a little lighter. It is pleasing that an element of teamwork is involved, although the soldier Hardy does have more of a role in the final conflct that Lois Lane. It does mean, though, that we jump very quickly between 4 or 5 different action scenes in quick succession and a more effecient approach to the storytelling might have streamlined this and made it less over-bearing.Although it is flawed, it does not revolve around spinning the earth to go back in time, a magic amnesia kiss or a Doctor Who level robot-woman, so it's not all bad.b) Superman is full of doubt in this movie but, unless you intend to aim young with the film, the purely heroic Superman of Reeve would not really work in modern films. He needs to have conflict, otherwise he is just too powerful. Cavill does a very good job of balancing the past and present of the character - possibly he would be better served by offering up a little more of the running time to character building, rather than action scenes. The contentious final act of violence is well-handled and established in the context of the scene. It's all about introducing conflict and turmoil to the character to make him more unpredictable and interesting. It was something new for the character and, unless you intend to do something new, there really is little point (As well-crafted as Superman Returns was, it really struggled to justify its existence).c) There are slips in logic (notably inconsistencies over Superman's need for oxygen etc). They are frustrating, because you would hope that the myriad readers who would have gone through the script really should have been able to pick up and iron out such inconsistencies. The strengths:Henry Cavill: he handles the character well, developing conflict whilst projecting the more classical aura. His motivation is clearly established, which gives him a more engaging arc than is often present in blockbuster films.General Zod/ Michael Shannon: the character has been significantly developed since Stamp's portrayal in Superman 2 and, as charasmatic as he was, it's all progress. The idea of understanding his point of view and motivation really helps with exploring the morality of the story. He brings a fierce intensity ("I will find him!") which interestingly conflicts with his reluctance to fight with Jor-El.Special effects: consistently excellent, they really sell the adrenaline of flying and the ferocity of the villains. Indeed, their ridiculous superiority over the soldiers is unnerving (swatting away at flies).Secondary characters: Hardy seemed particularly interesting, seeing that he was the one with a real arc - moving from miliary jackass to significant ally. And his own ongoing conflict with the female supervillain is particularly well-handled. That said, one or two were skimmed over (notably the reporters) and could have been developed to give the threat of the ending a little more weight.I did enjoy the film and its a little frustrating that so many seemed distracted by the ending and forgot the good film that set it up.

AND SO IT BEGINS (4K EXCELLENCE)
Must admit, other than Disney Comics, DC's Superman comic series was, from an early age, a firm favourite when growing up.This the first of a new beginning from director and writer Zack Snyder.....The story starts during the final days of planet Krypton when we see Jor-El (Russell Crowe) the father of Kal-El/ Clarke Kent/Superman (Henry Cavill /young Clarke - Dylan Sprayberry) make the decision in the knowledge Krypton's days were now few to locate a place far away to transport his new-born son too, giving him a chance of life. However, General Zod (Michael Shannon) try's to prevent Jor-El from doing so, and when he does promises that he will, however long it takes find Kal-El.General Zod and his followers after committing treachery against the state are sentenced to exile in the Phantom Zone. The young Kal-El lands upon his fathers chosen destination on a farm in Kansas and is found and raised by Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) and his wife Martha (Diane Lane)Though Jonathan realizes early-on that Clarke as Kal-El is known by has unusual power he does everything in his power to protect his adopted son from the World becoming aware.Clarke now a young man though having occasions to use his powers manages to remain invisible, it is now that he has his first encounter learning of who he is and meeting a hologram of his real father deep below the artic icecap and where he first comes across reporter Lois Lane (Amy Adams)Lois will promise to keep Clarke's secret until he's ready to show the World who he really is, which will not be so far off as the banished General Zod and his followers arrive determine to bring Kal-El back into the fold and create a new Krypton on planet Earth at the expense of its inhabitants.General Zod and his followers have similar powers to that of Superman, the battle begins, though not wanting to destroy his distant past Clarke will have to make difficult choices to protect the people he'd grown-up around. Will Superman prevail against all odds? For me, this action-packed, CGI wonder is far and away the best of the Zack Snyder trilogy and yes, is greatly enhanced on the 4k Format....a spectacle to behold, well worth the upgrade investment.
