Q: Is this a good solution for playing a portable hard drive full of video on my Smart TV that won't play video directly from the portable hard drive.

Yes, but it depends on the resolution of the video. If it is like 1080 it should be fast enough.If it is like a 4k or something I doubt it will be fast enough to play seamless.

If you are referring to hardware upgrades, the answer is you cannot, as the RAM and eMMC storage are soldered on to the system board. The machine does have a micro SD card slot for adding additional storage, and 2 USB ports for adding additional peripherals.
